XP laptop doesn't maintain Internet connection

I keep losing my Internet connection on a Vostro XP Pro SP3 laptop.  This happens with both wifi and wired.  The connection to the router is fine – I can access other points on my home network even when I can’t get to the Internet.  None of the other computers that access the network have this problem.

What happens?  I’ll try to go to a url, and the browser just says “loading” and goes nowhere.  The problem is intermittent — for example, sometimes I can get to a website home page, but then can’t reach anything else on the site; my email client can connect to the email server less than half the times it tries.  This happens in IE, Firefox, email client, so it’s not an application problem.  It also happens running XP in safe Mode.  It happens whether I let XP manage the network connections or use the Dell utility.  Things I’ve tried: malware scan (no problems found), changing wireless channel, disabling firewall and anti-virus software, not letting power management turn of network adapters, assigning laptop a static IP address.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

JMGoodman,

I would try updating the firmware in the wireless router.

Try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11.

And also try these tweaks.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Thanks for the suggestions. Router firmware is up to date.  Power management settings are as you suggest, as are the wifi settings.

It's not a wifi issue -- I can access other points on the local network, but not the Internet.

 JMGoodman,

Is this with Internet Explorer? If so, open Internet Explorer. Click on tools, manage add-ons, enable or disable add-ons. Disable all the add-ons. Close Internet Explorer. Wait 15 seconds, then open Internet Explorer.

What happens?

Can you access the iternet with Mozilla Firefox

It happens with IE, Firefox and Chrome -- also with my e-mail client.  So I don't think it's an application problem.
