XP Linksys WUSB11 v.2.6 connection problem

I had my WUSB11 connected to my Dell 200MMX, under Win98. It connected and ran flawlessly for over a year

I replaced my old Dell 200MMX computer with a Dell8300, Win XP. I simply unplugged the usb WUSB11 cable from the old computer, and plugged into new computer. The WUSB11 device was not moved.

I installed the driver from the Linksys CD (V2.10.37.2037), and configured using Wireless Zero in XP.

When I boot up, I cannot connect.

1. the icon in the Preferred Networks box in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window is always red (red X)(unavailable) after bootup.

2. I highlight it and click refresh. It turns blue (available), but nothing in the Available networks box above appears.

3. I highlight the icon again in the Preferred networks box, and keep hitting refresh. Sometimes the icon appears in the top box (ie, connection made) after one or two refresh clicks, or sometimes it takes an hour of resfreshing to connect.

4. Once connected, I have never lost the connection until another reboot.

NB:
1. I have IEEE and the XP firewall disabled.

2. I have a laptop (Inspiron 8600) with XP and internal Dell wireless card; never a problem recognizing the network, nor connecting under XP.

3. Putting back my old Dell in same spot, Win98, with Linksys' configuration software, and no problems.

4. All other non-XP computers (3 other Dells with Win98 and Win ME) in different locations in the home have no problems connecting.

I downloaded the  driver for the WUSB11v2.6 per recommendation of Linksys tech, and followed the instructions carefully to update the driver.

I now have Wireless Network Connection #2 and Instant Wireless USB Network Adapter ver.2.6 #2.

Am I getting multiple incidences of this connection? If so, how can I go back to just one version of each?

Updating with the new driver downloaded did nothing to correct the problem.

What can I do to get my XP-Pro computer to work with Linksys? Sad that I can easily connect with my ~7 year old Dell 200mmx, but not with my new 8300.

What kind of wireless device (router or access point) are you trying to connect to?  Is the SSID of the device hidden?  Are you using MAC address filtering?  Are you using encryption?  If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you will have to configure the new computer to connect to this wireless network by specifying the SSID, configuring the router/access point to accept the MAC address of the new computer, and/or configuring the encryption on the new computer.

==then you will have to configure the new computer to connect to this wireless network =========

I have configured the SSID and WEP encryption correctly. I can eventually connect, and once connected , never lose the connection. The wireless connection is not initially shown as available. Getting the connection recognized is the problem.

On my laptop, WinXP using Dell Wireless internal card, I have no problems. The difference ,aside from Dell Wirellss vs Linksys Wusb11 on my desktop, is Dell also installed its wireless software with "configure in windows" set. Linksys instructions state that in XP, their software (except card driver) should not be installed; only the XP configuration software should be present.

cgherman,

Even though you are running WinXP, you can use the Linksys WUSB11 management utility.  In fact, I have had better luck with it than WZC.  Linksys prefers that you use WZC, but their utility will work - maybe better.  You can install it by using Windows Explorer and navigating to the \Utility folder on the WUSB11's installation CD.  In the \Utility folder you will find a setup.exe file.  Double click it and the Linksys management utility will be installed.  Once installed navigate into the Wireless Network Connection's properties and uncheck the box that says Let Windows Manage this Connection.  Then through the Start Menu, start the Linksys management utility.
