XP pro Networking Problem
I just got a Dell Dimenson 4600 loaded with Win XP pro and for some reason it can see the other computer on my network, but the other computer cannot see it. It there something I am missing? I have set up the networking, but trying to ping from the other PC running Win 98 seems to be a problem. Workgroup is the same. Before I put in this new unit I had a Dell unit running regular Win XP and it had no problem with the networking issue.
Thank You for your help

My first guess is the XP firewall is engaged. If not that, make sure that File & Print Sharing is enabled and both machines are in the same Workgroup.

I have not seen anything on the XP firewall. Does it have a firewall built in, and how do you turn it off?
Thank You for your reply.

Go to Network Properties, right click your network connection and select Properties form the drop-down menu, then click on the Advanced tab and remove the check mark that enables the firewall.

Is this network exposed to the internet (you didn't mention anything about that in your initial post). First get your network working, then worry about the firewall. The XP built-in firewall will not allow file and printer sharing if it is enabled on the local area connection. You can use a third party firewall, but it has to be configured to allow local traffic and block traffic from the outside. If you are behind a router, then you are protected from outside attacks and the router provides the same protection that the XP firewall would provide.

Did you use the Wizard to set up the network? If you did you might want to go back and do every thing manually. Also are you using dhcp or putting in ip addresses?

Thank you Volcano11 and cahallmxj. I believe it is all set and working good now. I was unaware that XP pro had the built in firewall and it was causing problems. I am behind a router and everything looks good.
Thanks Again,
