xps 15 L501x -- wireless connectivity problem
I purchased a Dell XPS 15 L501 Laptop for my son for Christmas. It works great except for the wireless connection. We have to be within 10 or so feet of the router in order to connect wirelessly. If we move even a few feet further away, the wireless signal is still detected as "excellent" but the internet won't load -- sometimes it says the wireless network is hidden, sometimes it has other messages. I spent 3 to 4 hours with Dell customer support (they took over the computer, etc.) and they finally said that all the settings are correct, etc., etc., etc. and this was just the way it was going to be. Needless to say, I was not happy. After that I haven't had any luck getting hold of anyone at Dell that can help me in any way and it is frustrating.
My other son also has an XPS laptop -- M1730 and it connects from anywhere in our house so I don't think its our router. Here is our information:
Router: NetGear WGR614v9
Laptop Specs -- Windows 7, i5 CPU, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit operating system
Wireless Adapter: Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN
I am wondering if I need to upgrade the wireless card . . . and if so, what I should upgrade to. Dell support tried every possible setting on both the laptop and the router so going through all that again seems pointless. Also, all drivers are up-to-date on both the router and the laptop.
Can someone out there help me!
THANKS.

delta_dawn,
Did you try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11. Please make sure that you have DHCP enabled and do NOT use Mac Address filtering. Broadcast the SSID.
How to login to your wireless router
If updating the Intel card, try updating it from...
Intel® Driver Update Utility for Intel® wireless adapters
Also try these tweaks.
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
Restart your computer.
--------------------------------------
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

My girlfriend had the exact same issue on her brand new XPS 15
It turns out the wireless card had one of the wires disconnected. It is fairly simple to do, all you need is a small phillips screwdriver

Hi, I just fixed my new XPS 15. I can't be certain that it's the same issue, but the internet on the computer was so slow that it was unusable. I did some research and found that Dell included something called Sendori on the computer which is basically a giant advertiser that reroutes all your internet traffic through their system. Besides being a huge security threat in my opinion, I figured maybe it was messing with my ability to send and receive data. I guess it was slowing things down, because when I removed it, my speeds jumped dramatically. Streaming video was at least 20x faster and other, less bandwidth intensive sites jumped to a lesser degree. Try it and let me know if it helps. Thanks, Josh
p.s. Oddly, the problem did seem worse when further away, but I have no idea why unless it was just one problem amplifying the effects of the other.

I also have the XPS 15 -- wireless is <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> , we're returning it, this is unacceptable ... spent HOURS with support, they dispatched someone, he replaced the card and antennae -- same problem. We shipped the computer back, they replaced it, same problem ... we're done with the XPS 15 (and, sadly, probably Dell -- all over a wireless card, can't believe they'd let that happen!)
