XPS 620I Network connection problem

I have just got an XPS620I and the only way I can connect to the internet or to my network was to install a USB wireless network point.

I have a Belkin wireless router which connects my 4 pc home network and internet access this has worked ok for the last 5 years with no problem, however my new Dell XPS will not connect to my network all i get in the sharing section of vista is the message local access only unidentified network.

I use a cable modem which then goes to my router, I have also tried pluging the cable modem direct to the XPS network point I get the samw message each time, I took the XPS back to my vendor he tested it and it connected to the internet first time.

anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks in advance

Steve

How are you wanting to connect the 630 to the network wired or wireless.

you said you tried directly connecting this to the modem, when you did, did you power down the modem and pc. wait 3-5 min, connect the 630 to the modem, power on the modem again wait 3-5 min for the modem to power up and connect to your isp, then power on the computer. It should connect at this point.

If you are going to direct connect to the router repeat the same only add the router after the modem then the computer.

Dave thanks for the reply!

I would use the built in network point on the xps, but untill I sort out the connection I will have to use the USB wireless, however yes I did power down the modem, router and pc before trying to connect but this still does not work, the link lights do show green lights and activity, but I only get a local connection to the router as it is found as unidentified network. the wireless USB port finds the connection and identifies it correctly I get connected every time i turn on the XPS, I may have to just stick with the wireless for now and hope it does not go down.My other pc and wireless laptop connect to the router with no problem, this has never occured before until now. as i said the vendor tested it and it worked on his connection in the shop using standard cat5 cable and modem

do you possibly have MAC filtering on the router enabled?

Also when connected to the router by cable do open a run command and do an ipconfig /all

At last I have succeded in getting the ethernet connection working :emotion-21:

Dave I did not have mac filtering enabled, however I have given the XPS  a static ip address this, this then gave me a warning about having 2 connections for the internet that they would clash, so I disabled the wireless USB port after a router reboot the XPS connected to the internet via the router.

I have no idea why I had to mess around as in all my years I have not had to do this with any other of my previous home pc systems, my family computers connect first time every time, but at least I can continue online without worrying somthing was wrong with my new XPS.

Dave many thanks for the support during this issue I hope I can help others someday!!

Kind Regards

Steve
