Question: Does the Zino come with an internal antenna

Yes, the Zino 400 comes with internal antennas, you can buy and install a wireless card and it will work.

The service manual can be found HERE .

Hope this helps, and thanks for using the Dell Community Forum!

Yes dell offers the following cards and the system should already have the internal antenna lines in it. since you didnt order the card they should be taped down to the case with some white masking tape when you open it up.

  • Dell™ Wireless 1397 WLAN half-height mini-Card
  • Dell™ Wireless 1520 (11agn) WLAN half-height mini-Card

Can you tell me what the difference is between the cards?  I've tried two USB wireless adapters and one wouldn't work at all and the second crashed the system so badly that I had to do a restore.

Dell really should make a point of mentioning that these things don't come wireless-ready when you're buying them online.  I've gone back through the online purchase process twice and nowhere is it mentioned that you might be wanting a wireless card.  They try to sell you everything else under the sun.

Agreed that Dell should be clearer on their website that wireless is optional and not included by default - especially from Canada where they don't even give you an option to add it to the package.  Spent over 1 hours on the phone trying to find out if wireless was already included since it's not a customization item, and couldn't get a response.  Went to a chat session to ask there, and had someone try to sell me internet access then disconnect without even trying to address my question. Ordered anyway with the assumption that my new computer won't arrive with wireless, and am starting to research how I can fix that.

My understanding is that the biggest difference between wireless cards is how the 1397 is limited to 802.11b/g speeds, while the other card adds 802.11 n speeds and 5 GHz wireless for better range/reception.  Assuming you have a router that takes advantage of those features, it would be nice upgrade.

Can anyone who has added a wireless card after the fact confirm the statement above about antennas though?  The online photos I saw of a disassembled Zino (without wireless card) didn't have any antennas visible... I would hate to order a part and then find out that it still won't work correctly.

I was also completely unable to find anyone at Dell who even understood the question.  I gave up and went third party and got an Asus USB-N13 adapter which just works.  I followed the very simple instructions and installed it.  I wasn't keen to give up a USB port but I added a spltter to the other one so now I have four on the back available for add-ons.  I got it from NCIX online for $30.

I don't know about the antenna but I'm in a museum that is in a big old house that has been very difficult to set up for wireless and this adapter works better than any of the more expensive ones we've tried.

Hi Robert.

My Zino has arrived.  There are no antennas, despite two posts in this thread assuring me they would be there.  Please advise.

The entire experience of ordering from Dell is becoming rather frustrating, and my wife is telling me it was a mistake to trust your company in the first place.  I'm hoping we can resolve this quickly.

PLEASE NOTE BELOW -- ANSWER FOUND TO BE INCORRECT.

(Maybe I'm a one-off case, but my Zino did NOT include any antennas taped down inside the case.  It didn't include any antennas at all.  The wireless card I ordered seems kind of useless without them... come to think of it, the whole computer seems to a little less useful.  And as you can probably tell, I'm not very happy with this finding.)

@WorldzFree:  Thanks for the secondary confirmation.

After some discussion (and escalation) with Dell Support, they also sent me a set of antennas.  After installing my wireless card and reconfiguring my router slightly, I'm thrilled with the Zino.  It's not a powerhouse, but does exactly what I wanted and is very convenient.  Shame it took so long to get everything resolved - but it wasn't a priority so I didn't push hard enough initially.

Mine didn't include the antennas either.  I contacted Dell referencing this forum post and the tech manual picture.  They sent me the antennas.

I realize this thread is old, but how did you guys get the internal antenna system? I ordered a Zino HD a few weeks ago where the wireless networking option was not available through the configurations of the Employee Purchase Program (EPP). I ordered the 1520 internal wireless card but have no antennas to connect it to. Calling Dell for support for the last hour and get bounced around from person to person has not been a good experience. Once person said the card you bought isn't for your system...really I said...its quite clear in the manual its correct. Thanks for your help.

Patience, persistance, and escalation.

I convinced customer support that I had checked the manual, taken apart my Zino to install the card, and participated on this forum. The representative I was talking to still claimed that she couldn't help resolve the issue.  I politely stated that wasn't acceptable and requested to speak with her manager.  I explained to him that I didn't care if I had to pay for the antenna or not, but that I NEEDED to have one or else the system would be useles for me.  The missing antenna arrived at my door in under 36 hours, with a follow-up call the next week.  After all the frustration up to that point, it was nice to see that level of service finally provided!

My Zino HD now works wonderfully and does exactly what I expected.  I'm really loving the system and am very pleased with the quality of the hardware.  It's just a shame that getting things up and running initially was such a struggle.  Best of luck getting your issues ironed out.

Thanks for your analysis! It's very detailed, It is just the solution for my problem.

Oh boy, well, I've been on the phone with tech support for 55 minutes, had them read this thread, and now the parts people for 15 minutes, and none of them have any idea how they would even send me this internal antenna even if they wanted to.  It's not showing up in any of their internal apps.  Do you, or anyone who's gotten this sent to them happen to have the Dell part number for the antenna?

Super frustrated,

Chris

Now I'm on hold again while he checks whether they can actually sell it to me

Of course, that one is not in stock, but the identical 74n52 is in stock for the same price.  Now I'm on hold again, but progress is being made.

Chris
