What operating system? If it had Vista and you installed Windows XP you will need Windows XP specific drivers as the Vista drivers are not compatible.
Also, It sounds like the chipset drivers were not installed.
The general install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Chipset Drivers (3) Install Device Drivers. There are some other special drivers for laptops that need installing also.
HERE is the Dell downloads for Vista 32 bit and 64 bit and for Windows XP.
Go to http://support.dell.com/ and select the option to enter your service tag number. That will list all the drivers that are applicable to your specific model.
