Will a chargeback work?

I was wondering if I could do a chargeback on Dell. I ordered a laptop from Dell. Everything was going smooth until I realized that Dell charged me twice and sent me 2 identical laptops instead of 1 (I didn't order two, only one, but 2 duplicate orders were created). I spent over an hour on the phone (called 1-800-624-9897) trying to reach someone who could help me return the duplicate one (box sealed), but I was only able to talk to 100% unprofessional and useless reps who kept transferring me between each other. Eventually, I was transfered once again and in a few minutes the call dropped.

If I send the second laptop to the address it was shipped from (with tracking, of course) and then call the bank and ask for a chargeback, would it help?

Also, if could theoretically get someone on the phone, would they give me full refund, since it was their fault?

Assuming you did only order one...

Most credit cards are very good about reversing duplicate charges. I would try that and then let Dell contact you about getting the machine returned. They will most likely contact you once they realize the charge has been reversed. And if they don't? Just keep it.

Why should you spend YOUR time and money to return it and have it tracked?

Thanks for your reply!

There is something I forgot to mention - different cards were used. The order was being placed over the phone. The rep tried my first card and said it was declined, so I gave him another one, and it went through. But later I learned that the first transaction actually DID go through as well and I ended up with 2 orders.

What you are advocating with keeping the laptop even though you reverse the charges is called stealing.

Bad karma.

It worked for me, after Dell shipped two 8400 desktops, when only one was ordered and I had already returned the unwanted order, it certainly got Dell's attention. LOL  :emotion-2:

ieee:

Perhaps bad karma, but it is not stealing. Dell's mistake here was more than just the cost. Why should someone have to spend their time fixing Dell's mistake?

This is from the Federal Trade Commission's web site:

Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?

A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift.

I am the type that would make a reasonable attempt to return it, but I certainly would not spend over an hour dealing with it, and there is no obligation to do so.

I think it is moot anyway, as I believe that Dell would make contact if the charge was reversed.

Glad Dell worked out for you. Nice to know there are people like you who 'do the right thing' even though it takes some effort...

Have a great Christmas.

Thanks for all of your advices guys!

It actually got worked out in a peaceful way. Today I called Dell once again, and after about 30 minutes and speaking to 3 reps I was able to find someone who helped me. The guy provided me with return number and emailed a UPS label. They said they will refund me within 30 days (good thing I got money saved, as I still have to pay the credit card bill with these two charges until I get a refund).

Pleased to hear the problem is resolved.

A hint: Ask for a tracking number from UPS, so you can prove it's been returned.    :emotion-5:
