Will adding memory to 4600i solve my problem
I have a Dimension 4600i ...
Processor Intel pentium 4cpu 3.00GHz..
.Processor speed 2.92Ghz
Memory 512MB
OS MS Windows XP Home Edition
The message i keep getting is that there is not enough space on C disk....Will adding memory solve this problem?
I read the other posts regarding additing memory & check out the Crucial website....I can add up to 4GB.....If i add 4 GB the current 512MB memory must be removed. Is this where all my info is stored? How do I transfer or save the info and transfer it to new memory cards?
thanks
Mary

The message you are getting is that your harddrive is full and cannot handle anymore files and such. Sound like it is time to do some disk maintenance. Remove any programs you are no longer using, Delet your temp files and cookies from internet explorer.A good program for doing things like this is CCLeaner.
Adding more memory will help with the overall performance of your system but not for the issue you are having.

Yes you can but if you have the intergrated vidoe model you will have to add an external USB drive as there is no room in the case for an internal one

Thanks again for the quick reply....
I did what you suggested regarding deleting files and i used CCleaner.......this freed up some space but I only have 1% free on hardrive....guess i have too many prpgrams etc.
How do i know if i have integrated vidoe model?
Is there any store/web site ypu suggest to purchase an external USB harddrrive? I live in NYC ......Even if I have room inside case i may opt for external harddrive... i am not computer saavy & don't want to "mess things up"

1% free is not a good thing. The drive also function as temporary memory so with so little free you cannot use that function.
Also make sure that you empty the trash can. A lot of deleted files are only temporarily deleted until you empty the trash can.
As for stores most office stores like Staples, OfficeMax, Bestbuy, Walmart will sell them as to the web you can try Newegg.com ,Tiger Direct.com. as a start.

The Dimension 4600 supports a second internal hard drive.
How to install a second HARD DRIVE.
After the physical installation of the hard drive, check the system setup, that the hard drive is enabled [on] and in order for windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted, using Windows XP Disk Management.
SYSTEM SETUP.

Mary Ann.
You are welcome.
A hint, Dell shipped the 4600 with both SATA and IDE hard drives, open 4600 case and check the hard drive that's installed, it would be easier to match the exsisting.

The "C disk" is your hard drive, not physical RAM memory. It means your hard drive, where the Operating System, your programs and data is stored, is full or nearly full. You will either need to buy a second hard drive or a larger capacity hard drive to eliminate not having enough space on the hard drive (or delete items that are no longer used or needed, or off load some data to data CD's or DVD's). You need a MINIMUM of at least 2GB of hard drive space free for Windows to operate properly.
However, upgrading the memory to 2 GB will allow more programs to run at one time and add more room for Windows operations. You can add up to 4GB however the 32 bit Operating Systems cannot fully address 4GB so you will only use about 3.2GB.

Thanks for the info....I think I will start with adding an external hard drive but i am trying to determine if I have fire/wire or eSata available on my computer.

If opened the case i would not know what to look for .........I was investigating external hard drives....chatted with someone at Edge who supposedly checked my computer & told me "Ok, your system was released before FireWire was a usable standard, so as is, your system only has support for the USB 2.0 interface. You would need to purchase an addon card to use either fireware or esat" - That company does not sell the cards so she wan't trying to sell me anything- Any other way I can check to detrmine if I have fire/wire or eSata?
thanks

Mary.
The 4600 does not have either e-SATA or Firewire, you would need to install a PCI controller card, similar to THIS for the e-SATA and card HERE for Firewire.

The simplest and easiest way still is to add an external usb drive as per some of the examples shown HERE

checked out the site...... The description has PCI External e-Sata but the pic looks lioke it has to be installed....
I have been doing some research but think I 'm confusing myself....
Do you think this is worth the trouble or should I get a new computer......I was thinking of a Mac because they have 6 stores in NYC (some 24/7)...If there's a problem I would just take the computer to them.......Also when i bought this Dell the customer service was HORRIBLE -I spent hours/DAYS on the phone with reps that knew less than me- I dread going through that again.
