9020 MT, PSU upgrade, adding drives

Hi All,

New to the forum.

Have the OptiPlex 9020 Mini Tower. Switching out the PSU for the Corsair CX550M and I have the 24 Pin to 8 Pin adaptor.

My question is; would it be better to power the drives (optical, SSD and HDD) from the existing MOBO power cables or should I power them directly from the new PSU (have plenty of cables and connections).

The Graphics card is the ASUS Cerberus 1050 ti which is drawing power directly from the board so my thinking was to limit the power going through the board and power the peripheral drives directly from the PSU.

Any thoughts?

You run the risk of catastrophic motherboard failure if you use anything other than the original design which is to use connectors from the motherboard to the drives.

I'm not going to get into the floating ground or power surge or loading issues.   This is why rather than using an adapter I chose the  7VK45 365w  power supply as an upgrade for my 9020.

I'll go with the connectors from the motherboard to the drives then so. Thanks for the advice
