I have the same pdf you do. The 980 takes DDR3 RAM.
Also, I'd like to suggest going with 8GB. Not only is it an improvement in speed, but if you have 4GB, you're left with approx. 3.5GB usable RAM for your applications due to OS.
Crucial RAM is guaranteed to work in Dell's. But if you're looking for a lower cost, A-tech, the RAM I use, also comes with a lifetime warranty.
I should also remember to add that if your version of Windows is 32-bit, then only 4GB of RAM is utilized.
Did you buy your 980 used? Then it's a good idea to replace the CMOS battery (size 2032). You should get about 5 yrs. out of it. You'd be surprised the erroneous problems that come up with a low battery. There's always the option to test your current 3v battery also.

You cant use DDR2 anything.
Must be low density
Must be non ECC
Must be PC3 12800 speed
Must not be buffered or registered

If you haven't tried an SSD, you'd be amazed at the difference in speed compared to an HDD. The 980 has SATA2, not 3. All of the references for HDD and SSD interface in the tech guide indicate 3GB/s, which is SATA2. Also, see speedstep's reply - https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/Optiplex-980-MT-Windows-Reinstall-SSD-Upgrade-SATA-6gb/td-p/6111989
Please keep in mind that on this end, we don't know much about which particular 980 you have, size being one, whether MT, DT, or SFF. Two references - photo below when it shows up and the very first post in the Optiplex forum. We also don't know what CPU you have.
I don't think you'll have any trouble with home video editing, but it is all the more reason to have 8GB RAM. Remember, you can max the RAM at 16GB. And...Is it home or commercial video editing you're doing?

Video editing performance is based on GPU not SSD or CPU.
Thats why the Red Rocket Video Editing Accelerator is $7000
SSD's improve Boot Times they DO NOT improve performance for apps by much.

SSD's have faster read and write speeds and don't just improve boot times. If that's all they did, they wouldn't be so popular, not to mention popular with gamers also. You know that SSD's, RAM, CPU's, GPU's all contribute to speed.
You make it sound like CPU's don't matter, yet you know the wrong CPU can bottleneck a GPU.

Are you 100% sure that an ECC ram won't work on an Optiplex 980?

Yes. ECC RAM is for workstations and servers. Precision's and PowerEdge's are just a couple of examples of Dell servers.
Speedstep hasn't been on this forum since mid-Sept. 2022.
