I also wanted to add a 2nd NVMe drive to a Dell Optiplex 7080 tower and had similar issues.

Added the drive to the 2nd M.2 slot and it was the only one recognized by the system.

Put in slot marked as M.2 PCIe SSD-3 and the BIOS would detected it as the only one installed and that is was in slot marked M.2 NVME SSD-2 (according to the BIOS).

The new drive would be detected as the only drive installed and the drive (512GB NVMe) that came in the computer would not be detected, no matter what slots they were installed in. The original would be detected only if it was the only drive installed.

Called Dell Support and was told (after some time) that the system does not support two M.2 drives. The Dell Opitplex 7080 Tower Setup and Specifications Guide says (on page 19) the two M.2 drive should be supported (I did not have this manual at the time of the support call).

If anyone can point out IF and HOW a 2nd NVMe can be installed please let use know.

Thanks

WG

Slightly off topic but I wonder why anyone would want to install more than one SSD.

System disc on SSD makes sense (faster boot, faster loading of applications) but for bulk storage it makes more sense to use one (or more) high capacity hard drives instead of extra SSDs. Much cheaper, more reliable in heavy traffic (SSDs have a finite life time in terms of volume of data read), plenty fast enough for database storage & access and a great way to backup your system disc. You may also be able to use RAID to increase access speed and/or reliability though you do need a 4 drive array to do both.

My Optiplex 9020 SSF is running a dual boot Windows & linux system on a 256GB SSD and bulk storage on a 2.5" 2TB hard drive - both in the single 3.5" drive bay in the chassis, without sacrificing the optical drive due to a cheap but cunning dual 2.5" to 3.5" adapter bracket - as the motherboard has 3 SATA connectors & 3 SATA power connectors, only 2 used in the standard configuration, I just needed a short (15cm) extra SATA data cable to complete the upgrade.

It makes sense because that's what I have.

I don't want to buy another drive when I already have one and it should work.

I have a Dell 7080 MT that came with a 512GB M.2 NVME.  I had a 1TB M.2 NVME that I installed in the second M.2 NVME slot and it works just fine.  I didn't have to change any settings.
