Hello,

I own a Dell OptiPlex 7450 All-In-One and am planning to use it as a server in a factory setting. The primary purpose is to run Windows 10 and PLC applications to control various industrial machines.

Given the continuous 24/7 operation in an industrial environment, I would like to know:

  1. Is the OptiPlex 7450 AIO suitable for such usage in terms of durability and performance?
  2. Are there any specific configurations or upgrades (e.g., cooling enhancements, SSD upgrades, or additional maintenance steps) you recommend to optimize the system for this use case?
  3. Are there any concerns or limitations I should be aware of when using this model for extended, high-load operations?

Best regards,

Hi

Would a linux/unix server option be more resilient?

These are basically notebook computers mounted behind LCD screens -- no, it's not the ideal candidate for the workload you intend.

Assuming uptime is the goal along with the workload, you can likely buy two standard desktops for the cost of one all-in-one and have one on standby.  All in ones are expensive to repair when they fail -- desktop systems less so.

Hello,

Is it ok to use a PC/Laptop/AIO as a server? I want to use a Dell PC as a server for long periods of time (for many years) without shutting it down, is it a good option when it comes to stability and durability or should I buy a server? The main reason why I dont want to buy a sever is because it is more expensive, any regular PC can do the job, but I am concerned that the PC may fail after one or two years,

best regards.

You asked the same question already.

No, notebooks/All in ones and ordinary desktop PCs are not ideal servers.  You may get by with a desktop PC, replacing it (or the components) as they fail, but you won't end up with a true server.  And neither notebooks nor all in ones (which are essentially notebooks) are designed for 24/7 operation.

@ejn63 Thank you for your answer. My first question was regarding using AIO as a server, but many did not recommend it, and instead advised me to use a Desktop PC, so my concern in the second question was the Desktop durability compared to true servers. Thanks to you, I have now a solid idea of what should I buy and use. I am really grateful for your support dear friend,

Have a great day.
