Current CPU Does Not Meet Windows 11 Specifications

Question

I have a Dell Optiplex 3050 Mimi Tower running Windows 10 Pro

Activity would be home/office

Here are the details of the motherboard and CPU from Speccy:-
Operating System = Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU = Intel Core i5 7500 @ 3.40GHz Kaby Lake 14nm Technology
RAM = 32.0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1196MHz (17-17-17-39)
Motherboard = Dell Inc. 0W0CHX (U3E1)
Graphics = DELL S2721D (2560x1440@75Hz) Intel HD Graphics 630 (Dell)
Storage = 931GB Crucial CT1000MX500SSD1 (SSD)
931GB TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 (SATA)
Optical Drives = PLDS DVD+-RW DU-8A5LH
Audio = Realtek Audio

When I run the compatibility checker, I get the following message:-
The processor isn’t currently supported for Windows 11.
Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-7500 CPU @ 3.40GHz

I have looked at the minimum requirements as specified by Microsoft, and I meet all of those.

I would like to move to Windows 11 at some stage but don't want to purchase a new PC.

So, I'm posting here to try and find out how to best search for and purchase a CPU.

I know everybody says "wait and see", but I don't want to waste anybody's time by getting into that argument.

I know very little about hardware but enough (e.g. socket type ??) to know that I need assistance in selecting a compatible replacement.

I'm only at the research stage at the moment, so no specific urgency.

Can someone tell me of a website where I can specify my current CPU (or motherboard) and then select from a list of Windows 11 compatible upgrades.

If you could specify for me what are the "key elements" of a CPU that I MUST get, in order to have a correct fit for my system.

Doesn't look like a CPU upgrade to 8th gen is possible on this model. 6th and 7th gen CPU's were all that were offered and suggests a Z170 or even earlier Intel chipset motherboard and a 7th gen is max for a Z170.

Given the proprietary Dell components, a motherboard swap to one with an 8th gen or later would be a major undertaking and modifying. Best to just consider either a new or newer model PC that is Win 11 compatible.

My 3 year old Inspiron laptop is in the same boat, a 7th gen CPU and not upgradable for Win 11.

Hello @tomohawk_300154 , just click here to download Win 11 Creation Tool to make an installation USB drive. Set your BIOS setting to enable UEFI, and TPM. You can install Win 11 straight away. If you want to upgrade, use Rufus to strip the requirements and it will let you perform in-place upgrade.

Note 1: Some users already reported that their newer systems have problem when upgrading to 22H2, so a clean install will save you from running into those issue.

Note 2: After a clean installation, run Windows update to install the drivers. You will support your own system so don't install any of the extra Dell assist or support stuff. Just do a monthly update (following MS patch Tuesday). Keep your data backup if they are important to you.

Note 3: Dell will not provide Win 11 drivers for your system, so think hard before moving to Win 11.

You can also shop for Win 11 supported system, such as Optiplex 7060. Here is an example of a complete system for less than $200 usd, including a windows pro license.
