if you have tried many times using the old ram in DIMM1 and it never worked, and the old ram works like a charm in DIMM2, DIMM1 slot is broken most likely. this happens with some motherboard sometimes. If you do not notice any physical damage to the slot or gross dust or foreign material sitting in the slot, it may be electrically defective. just do not use it any more and you will be okay.
By the number of views on this it is apparent there is a problem. Why handle this privately when there are plenty of people wanting to see the solution. I too have DIMM 1 causing a failure when populated.
