Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF Powersupply upgrade with a 7020 PSU?

Current system:

Dell optiplex 7010 sff with an Intel i5-2500, 2x 4gb ddr3 ram, Gigabyte gt 1030 2gb ddr5, 500gb HDD, and the regular 240w psu.

So I would like to upgrade my gpu to a 2gb gtx 1050 low profile, but to do this best I would probably need a 300w psu, so since the optiplex 7010 sff doesn't seem to have any upgrade options so I was wondering if I could possibly use a 315w psu from a 7020 sff (Model D315ES-00 Power Supply 315W DP/N 0VX372 DPS-315CB VX372).

The 7020 psu has a an 8 pin power connector while my motherboard has a 24 pin socket. Could this work if I used an adapter?

Do you think this could work? I am new to pc building so I am still learning. If this psu wouldn't work, is there anything else that might work? Or do you think I should just keep the 240w and try out the gtx 1050 with that?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes. I don't think this psu would work now. There don't seem to be any upgrades for the sff 7010. I was only going to do it to get a better gpu, but now I think I might just get a low profile gtx 1650. It should be fine with my 240w psu, and it probably is the best gpu that could be used in this sff optiplex.

@John_ G.

"There don't seem to be any upgrades for the sff 7010"

you can remove the internal power supply and run wires thru the hole left behind with standard power supply that meets dell spec of 150W combined for the 3.3v/5v rails.

EVGA 700BR meets that spec

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=100-BR-0700-K1

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/evga-br-series-700w-atx12v-eps12v-80-plus-power-supply-dc-dc-technology-black/6346160.p?skuId=6346160

I would also put electrical tape over the edges of the hole because the edges tend to be very sharp.

Model D315ES-00 Power Supply 315W DP/N 0VX372 DPS-315CB VX372 is officially for Optiplex XE2.  Its 8 pin ATX motherboard connector looks identical to that used by optiplex 7020/3020/9020, but the exact pinout has not been verified to be the same.  If we assume Dell engineers are not extremely wicked in proprietary schemes that they use different pinout, we can reasonably presume the pinouts are the same. After all it would make sense to have one universal Dell 8 pin ATX MB protocol.  If you see a link proving that XE2 and 7020 share the same VX372 psu, please share.

In your case, it is difficult to adapt from 8 pin to 24 pin for 7010.  24 pin needs 3.3 V which is not provided w the 8 pin.  I will start a new discussion on the 8 pinout.

there is a way to upgrade to 280W SFF as I show in one of my discussion, but you would need an adapter.  https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/upgrade-of-Optiplex-small-form-psu-to-280W-for-GTX1050-1050Ti/td-p/7536972/jump-to/first-unread-message

yes that is DP/N VX372 psu for Optiplex XE2 which also works for 3020/7020/9020 w 8 pin ATX MB connector, as shown by this video.  thanks for sharing the video link.

it would not work for 7010.

because i recently put a gpu inside it (rx 550) but i think its not beeing fed enough power because on my current psu it says shall not exeed 90w but my cpu draws 55watts and my gpu draws 65watts is it possible i can just a put a regular tfx psu in it will it work? im thinking about this one:

https://www.1a.lv/p/qoltec-tfx-power-supply-350w-80plus-monolith-apfc/10l6

or this one please tell me if one of them fits my system

These TFX psu are better suited for DT optiplex. They may be a little bit too big for SFF case. If you manage to squeeze one of these in, you may not be able to put side panel back on.

Did adding the GTX 1650 work?  I am running the 7010 as well with i7-3770, 4x4GB RAM, 480GB SSD, just need a LP graphics card so the kids can play some games...  The 240watt PS is killing me...

Hi @Woody2136977,

Graphic card and processor will work great together:

Intel Core i7-3770 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 3.66% of bottleneck.

Optiplex 9010 SFF + GTX 1650 + YouTube  9010 has same 240w PSU.

Hi @master4131,

"current psu it says shall not exeed 90w"  90w for what?

I looked up the GPU TDP and it's 50w.  Even if yours is 65w, some people on YouTube have been putting 75w cards in their 7010 SFF's.  You should be ok with the PSU you have.

I could suggest the 400w Dell Vostro SFF PSU, but screw holes, and any other attachments, likely don't line up. That would leave it to 2-way foam tape.

GTX 1050 ti is 75w card.  YouTube List

Hi! what 7020 are you talking about here? it is the sff or non-sff? I'm thinking if the XE2 PSU will fit in the 7020 sff?

XE2 315W 4FCWX VX372

PSU fits in SFF 3020 7020 9020 NOT FOR 3010 7010 9010

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Optiplex-SWITCHING-H315ES-00-D315E001L/dp/B016PLMIZW

https://www.amazon.com/OptiPlex-Power-Supply-VX372-0VX372/dp/B016PIJXO4

Other than the XE2 315w There are no internal upgrades for SFF

There is no DT size for XE2 so thats why there is no DT power supply upgrade

XE2 is MT or SFF onlyXE2 is MT or SFF only

The ugly truth is you remove the internal supply and run wires thru the hole and have the PSU outside the case for non dell PSU or for DT/ SFF You also need MODDIY 24 pin to 8 pin adapter cable.

Regular size psu for DT SFF must sit outside the case and use Moddiy Adapter or equivalent.

@bradthetechnut

"current psu it says shall not exeed 90w" 90w for what?"

90W for the combined power for the 3.3v/5v rails on DT and SFF which is why a 75W card is NOT supported on DT and SFF. Its also why putting a dual slot card in the BLACK slot wired X4 is NOT a good idea.  The BLUE Slot wired x16 supports 50W max. Those ratings are based on the UL safety spec for PCI-E slot power.  The 10W slot is X1 the 25W slot is X4 and the 75w slot is X16.   Note in the table below that the power used is cumulative. USFF isn't listed because it has no slots.

9AMPS on 3.3v/5v combined which is 30W and 7.1 Amps on 12v which is 85W.

That's 115W just for the Slots and that's not everywhere.

5v is used for USB ports 5W max per port for USB3 and 2.5W per port for USB2.

" some people on YouTube have been putting 75w cards in their 7010 SFF's. You should be ok with the PSU you have."

75w cards on DT and SFF is always bad advice and not based on Dell specifications or UL 94v safety regulations.

@redxps630

" Its 8 pin ATX motherboard connector"

There is no such thing and the 8 pin EPS12V or 8 pin PCI-e connector ARE NOT for Dell Optiplex 3020 7020 9020 Precision T1700

There is an engineer who made his own adapter for this.
