Dell Optiplex 745 with Bios 2.6.6

Not sure why you would want dual core when so many things run better on 4-core now days.  And cores go beyond that in newer systems.  Is the current CPU in your 745 single-core?

Actually I have a different system for my use, I just want to fix this Optiplex up and have it run as good as it can as a media device.

I picked it up for free from my school.it has a Pentium Dual e2180 I think? Around 2ghz. 5 GB of ram, which is good enough for light tasks on Linux, But I want a better CPU in it  for a 1080p YouTube device. Or an old system to play old games and mess with old os on.

I wanted to install a e8400 because it was a cheapest one I could find. Thanks for the answer btw!

In agreement, E8400's are cheap.

Yup, e8400 I got was like under $2, and the q6600/6700 are like $15-20. That's definitely more than the worth of the pc too. 🤣

It works.  Just remember it's dual core and not quad core.

@bradthetechnut​ I have the same Optiplex 745 system with core 2 duo. I want to upgrade it to core 2 quad. My bios is updated to 2.6.6.   Can you tell which version of core 2 quad will it support? <Private data removed from public view. DELL-Admin>

@Mustafa19​  Please pardon, it didn't occur to me you could be looking for a list.  So often people just want to know the top CPU when inquiring.  While the Q6700 is the top CPU for the 745, for others, just see the userbenchmark link I gave.
