Dell Optiplex 7460 GPU High temp after BIOS update

But the result was always - "bios update blocked due to unsupported downgrade". Nothing helps.

Can anyone guide me what can I do? In case there's no any solution the only option left is to give this AIO back I to the store and make refund I think.

@alsofter that's strange behaviour to occur as a result of a BIOS update. There is no mention of thermal profile updates listed for that BIOS revision. The inability to downgrade the BIOS may be due to this BIOS containing security vulnerability fixes which are required for the system.

Have you tried reinstalling the latest BIOS and then trying downgrading 1 BIOS to 1.6.4 - https://www.dell.com/support/home/ie/en/iebsdt1/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=c6h42&oscode=wt64a&productcode=optiplex-7460-aio

With regards to the high temperatures, can you hear the fans spinning correctly as a response to the high temps and system load?

Are you also running the latest graphics drivers on the system?

Have you checked to see if the system is still using the dedicated graphics card rather than the integrated one before running the AIDA test?

I tried that trick but got the same message that BIOS upgrade blocked for 1.6.4 version.

With regards to the high temperatures, can you hear the fans spinning correctly as a response to the high temps and system load?

Yes, fans seems to be ok as they rotates faster when GPU and CPU temperatures start raising.

Are you also running the latest graphics drivers on the system?

Yes, I updated both NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers but there's no changes.

Have you checked to see if the system is still using the dedicated graphics card rather than the integrated one before running the AIDA test?

@alsofter the temperatures that the system is exhibiting are within the acceptable limits for use, however its very strange for the temperature to jump so high as a result of the BIOS compared to what it previously was. The system then throttling back after it reaches this heat is what it is supposed to do to protect it naturally leading to slower frame rates.

BIOS updates that address thermal issues normally lower working temperatures rather than increasing it though which is why I am concerned.

Previous to the BIOS update when you were running Aida and were getting temps no greater than 60 degrees c, what kind of framerates were you seeing?

Can you try disabling Speedstep and Speed Shift in the BIOS and then runs the test again to see if that makes any difference. (Intel Speed Shift is found under the Power Management options and Speedstep is under Performance)

Whilst you are trying this I shall discuss the case with engineering to get their advice on it.

Today I came to the idea that perhaps I mislead myself and you and the high temps were also before BIOS upgrade. I used 2 apps for this benchmark. One is AIDA to run GPU tests and other one is GPU-Z to measure GPU temperature. Perhaps I used NVIDIA GTX1050 in AIDA but forgot to change select list option in GPU-Z dropdown box and saw temperature for Intel UHD graphics during the test. I think it was so.

So, my excuse. The subject of this topic is wrong now. But the problem still remains. According to nvidia gtx 1050 (mobile) specifications working temperature is up to 94-95C. Mine is about 90-92 and it's in acceptable range, but throttling makes me crazy. UHD graphics gives better FPS than dedicated gtx1050. To my mind it shouldn't be so. I tried to intalll very old game (counter-strike 1.6) that's not so heavy for graphics, but even there the GPU temperature raises up to 88C in peaks. During the game it's in range from 66 to 88C.

I finished 3dMark06 tests yesterday and got 12000 points. At the same time other results from another users with the same gtx1050 graphics and intel core i7-8700 processor show from 30000 to 40000 points. I think that's because of throttling.

The only thing now I'd like to understand is if it's normal Dell Optiplex 7460 work or not. Depending on the answer I'll take this AIO to service or make a refund in the store.

Yesterday I tried to reset my Windows to control point first. That leaded me to the fact I couldn't boot my windows. After Dell logo appeared then BSOD appeared and then that case repeated in cycle after an attempt to automatically repair the system. After that I restored Windows to intial point (re-install) and everything was ok, but the problem with throttling remains.

As I mentioned above, the temperatures that you are seeing are within the operating temperatures for the card and the system. The system will throttle when it becomes too hot or after prolonged use to protect itself. That is it working as designed. 

What doesn't make sense is it working fine up until the BIOS update. Can you clarify that prior to the BIOS update, you could play games fine without any framerate drop?

For those results you referenced above, were the graphics card results also in similar Optiplex systems?

Our Optiplex systems are designed primarily for business use, whilst the spec sheet shows high specs for processor, RAM and a dedicated graphics card, they aren't designed with gaming in mind. If you have bought this system to play games you may be better off returning it to the store and looking at a system designed for gaming.

As I said, now I'm not sure that it was fine before BIOS update, because perhaps I was observing the UHD graphics card temperature instead of NVIDIA during my tests. I didn't play games and load 3d apps before BIOS update because Dell Support Assist suggested to update BIOS in 30-40 minutes after first power-on of the AIO so I didn't have time for addtional graphics tests.

It's hard to say because the ranking of the 3dMark06 is built on base of the CPU and GPU pair. I looked for the intel core i7-8700+geforce gtx1050 (mobile).

Yes, I understood that. CPU cools down very good and works fast as it should with no loud fans sound. And I realy like how fast this Optiplex AIO was in office applications and internet surfing. But then there's no need in such graphics like gtx1050 because it can work only on 25% of its capabilities. Moreover I think temperatures 90-92C is not good for the GPU life time. So I returned this AIO to the store according to your advise. Anyway thanks for your kind support!
