Dell Optiplex 790 SFF i7 upgrade??!

So I bought a new Dell Optiplex 790 SFF and I put my gt 1030 into it and with the i5-2400 it works pretty well in games, but I could get some more performance out of it by installing an I7. I am aware that they support I7 CPU's but I don't really know which model. If someone could tell me which model is compatible with a 790 SFF and are sure that it works because I don't want to spend money on something that isn't going to work. Also is it even worth it to upgrade  to the i7 over the i5 2400?

EDIT 2400S

would be the recommended unit due to power supply being soo small.

You would actually get better performance for your money by getting a GT1030.

"I7 2400" comes up in Google, but not eBay or Amazon.  "I7 2400T" didn't come up at all in Google.

A compatible list of CPU's, or search by "processor," is in the Optiplex 790 Tech Guide.

Going from quad core to quad core doesn't always see much improvement.  From an I5 2400 to an I7 2600:  28% improvement according to game-debate translates to 1.28x faster, or 1.28x performance improvement.

I used a i7 2600K in my Optiplex 790 and it works well (But mine is the Desktop not SFF)

I tried a 3rd Generation i5 3450 and it did NOT work.

Also I used 20Gb or DDR3 Ram even if the documentation said maximum of 16Gb

Hope that helps

Hello Gosane,

how are you today, hopefully doing well.

In regards to your Rig, you have had success using the I7-2600K? Please let me know what modifications you have made, did you upgrade the power supply and or the Graphics card?

Thank you in advance,

Mateo

Hi!

I think that intel core i5 2400 is a great CPU but if you want something more I would recommend intel core i7 2600k if you want something cheaper you can get i7 2600 or i7 2600s.

First off, don't take any power related advice from speedstep.  They're as delusional as it comes, and completely obsessed with something they know nothing about.

I had a 790 SFF with an i7 2600 and a GTX 1050 Ti low profile, and ran that for over a year without any issue ever.  The lower powered S versions of these chips are for the USFF.

Don't waste time or money on an i7 2600K, because you need a motherboard doesn't support overclocking at all. Get the non-K, not the 2600s either.

I second some of what chocolatekarma says.  Since Optiplex BIOS doesn't support OC, you won't notice any difference between the I7-2600 and the I7-2600k.  Base and turbo GHz is the same.

Hi @AnryP,

Yes, an I7-2600 can go in a 790 DT.

From PC Builds:

Graphic card and processor will work great together on 1080p resolution:

Intel Core i7-2600 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 3.46% of bottleneck on 1080p resolution.

While no 790 DT's came up with GTX 1050 ti, the 7010 did.  The 7010 is simply the newer version of the 790.  DT still has 250w PSU.

You can put core i7 2600 with no problems you don't need to change your psu you can also put low profile nvidia gtx 1050Ti and your pc is ready for great gaming experiance
