Graphic troubles with an Optiplex 780 SFF

Hello everybody,
Hoping to be in the right place for the subject and that someone can help me,
I describe my concern. I have a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF. With a Intel core2 duo 8400 at 3GHz, 8gb ram, original hdd 7200Rpm, the rest is original. I put a graphics card on the PCIx16 port; an Nvidia GT710 2Gb DDR5.
Windows 7 x64. The card is recognized no worries. But however when i watch videos (youtube) or movies (VLC) in HD 720 / 1080P, it appears "jerks" as "lines" on fast scenes or not, it varies ...
I try to connect the PC on a other screen and that the same trouble... On GPUZ the port indicated is PCI 8x, same on the Nvidia control panel, max 8x. While on the Optiplex brochure the port is in 16x ... Anyone have an idea?

Some people talk about I/O for Sata3 which will take "PCI lines" I don't really understand ...
Maybe i need to enable/disable something in the BIOS?

I am lost...

Thank you in advance for your readings and maybe your answers, i'm available for more information if I forgot something.
Jean.

RX550 is an entry level card of RX 500 series.

RX550, RX560 bus interface is PCIe3.0x8.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_RX_500_series

RX570 is PCIe3.0x16.

GTX750 Ti is PCIe3.0x16. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_700_series

750Ti is offered in 4gb (in addition to 1 gb and 2 gb). Its TDP is 60W and recommended psu is 300W, much lower than RX550.  In general AMD card has higher TDP requiring higher psu, thus not suitable for SFF.

unfortunately the 4Gb 750Ti is offered in full height only. For low profile you get 2 GB.  The shorter card gets discriminated.

to upgrade 780 SFF psu you could consider 755 SFF psu 275W w ATX to mini-ATX adapter.  780 SFF uses mini-ATX 24 pin.

Hum, i need to find my way with a balance for 2Gb or 4Gb and Pcix16 or x8...

I hope i can find the best with 4Gb on 16x...

And also with low power needed...

recommending 75w cards is nonsense in an SFF dell with 235W power supply.

Not that I never heard of bottleneck before, but checking it had been missing a long time in this forum.  So that's thanks to redxps630 for bringing it.

Hi everybody,

Thanks again for all your precious information!!!

Finally i think i staying with the gt1030 because i just wanna see HD movie and watching Youtube videos.

With the gt1030 i will put an SSD of course i have now 8gb of ram and i think its enought for what i wanna do.

Put a Quad core stay on my mind but with a gtx750 and shipping cost its really expensive...

Maybe in the future i change all the component in the op780 with a full new configuration; motherboard psu gpu etc etc.

But now i need to choose the perfect GT1030, ive checked on my shop and find three of them.

maybe you can ask me wich one is the best of these three, or maybe an other one in a other shop on the web, im not stressed because like i told you before i waiting monney until the end of the month and i selling now the bad GT710...

As much fun as your having, please know Dell is quite proprietary with their PC's.  You very likely won't be able to just put a newer MB (motherboard) in the 780.  I think you'll be very happy with your 780 when you have it configured the way you want at the end of the month.

When you do consider a newer PC than the 780, an MT (mini tower) comes often recommended.  More options for GPU cards that fit and PSU's are more upgradeable.  The next generation after your 780, the 7010, 7020, 9010, & 9020, even the DT and SFF have slightly less space constraints (more notably the DT).  The 7020 and 9020 SFF can take a 315w PSU from the XE2 SFF.  Or if you get an XE2 SFF, it's a sporty little thing.

Current generation Optiplex's can have more limitations.  MT models are  smaller than they used to be and have small PSU's.

Hello hello,

Wow the XE2 SFF was great!!!

Yes i'll find a lot second hand pc's, a lot of 790DT and USFF at 100$ and the XE2 was really expensive! until 600$!!!

But now i think i find the best GPU 1030 and i stay with this one, with the ssd my 780 have a second life and thats great!

She's a little bit more expensive for me because in switzerland we have taxes from US products and with the shipping, but i thing she was really great.

I also did some double checking.  It seems that the GT 1030 works with some quad I5's and I7's, so why not the q9650?  While PC -Builds claims 23.03% bottleneck, GPUCheck claims less than 8%, which is good.

I think I saw a disclaimer on PC-Builds that's it's meant as a guide but not final buying decision.  When PC-Builds claims 100% bottleneck on some things, that's when I really double-check.

It's also a good thing you're upgrading your RAM.

Just so you know, USFF has no expansion slots.

Fun talking with you.  Have a good week.

Hi and thanks again for all your information.

I buy this gt1030 in approxymately 10 days, so i hope everything is ok and i dont forget in the future, to tell you if its work properly or not.

But now i have a doubt about the other PCI slot on the Optiplex780, the white one.

A slot PCI op780.jpg

I would like to put a internal sound card on the white slot, its a PCI slot right?

SO this card is ok?:

GT1030 works with Pentim D and Core2 duo etc.

There are zero issues EXCEPT the DDR4 versions of the cards which are Junk.

GDDR5 GT1030's work fine.

This has been tested specifically with the 780 and its fine.

Sound card in the white slot should be fine.  Sounds like your packing your PC full of fun.

Just remember to do one card at time.  Start with either card, power up, make sure it works, then power off, unplug, and install the 2nd card.  That way, if in case of any errors, you know where they're coming from.

It's like that too with SSD, RAM, and CPU.  Not sure how far you plan on going, so it's an fyi.

Before I forget, make sure you have the latest BIOS first for your 780.  I can't remember if I mentioned that already.

One suggestion is to compare cost of parts + shipping with newer refurb PC + shipping.  It's likely you'll still be able to use GT 1030 and 100% likely you'll still be able to reuse sound card.  And don't worry, I get it things are expensive in Switzerland.  Like may be it's easier to do parts over time as compared to new pc all at once, plus GT 1030 and sound card.

Thanks for all the kudos!   And accepting my post as a solution.  I wasn't expecting all of that.
