How do I test my psu adapter?

Question

So I got an adapter to upgrade the power supply on my Dell Optiplex 7020 MT. How do I test it with a multimeter to make sure it's working correctly before plugging it into my motherboard?
I don't want to run the risk of frying my motherboard.

PD: I have never used a multimeter before.

you turn the multimeter to DC volt, try first to measure volt of a new AA battery. Red probe on +, black on -/gnd. If you see 1.5 V, bingo you learn how to use it.
