Nah, a 7th gen i5 will cover me... I'm fixing up a 5050 sff for a Plex project. I'm not really worried about 11, although I feel eventually MS will slacken its requirements to increase the uptake.
@bradthetechnut Howdy. I saw this thread and your question - I have an OptiPlex 5050 with a i7-7700 that I would like to install Windows 11 on. Do you have any advice or recommendations?
I use the github win 11 iso which skips cpu secure boot tpm checks.
i used to be able to use Win 7 pro COA key to activate win10/11 but this is now blocked by ms so I have to resort to other means. If the 5050 had Win 8 pro originally from Dell then you might be ok with auto activation.
Although it is not on supported list, OptiPlex 5050 met all requirements and can take a straight forward Win 11 installation. At least up to build version 22H2, but same result is expected with 23H2.
Set BIOS firmware to UEFI boot mode, enable Secure Boot and TPM.
Download and make an installation USB media using Windows 11 Creation Tool. During selection of destination, delete all existing partition to one unallocated space. Let Windows installation format and setup partitions automatically. Disconnect ethernet to receive option for local account setup.
Or you can download Win 11 ISO and using Rufus to select whichever bypass options for unsupported machine and to select local account, no data collection, no OOBE questions.
What is the reason for preservation of partitions that may or may not existed (new drive) in the first place? Why not allowing the Win 11 installation to create them?
"delete all existing partition[s] to one unallocated space" speaks of a used drive with an OS already on it. Of course Win11 will make all the necessary partitions on a "new drive," which is referenced in your post above.
While Win11 might be different, Win10 didn't allow me to delete "system" and "MSR" partitions when reloading.
Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. Although my post was to provide instructions for user PW93 inquiry to install Win 11, the video posted by Dell-Nat M having the same instructions for Win 10 installation.
The main point is to prep the drive for installation, used drive needed to be reset to work as new drive. Nothing left behind from previous OS. Hence the meaning of a clean install.

Optiplex 5050 SFF Owner's Manual - pg. 64
Optiplex 5050 Spec Sheet
The Optiplex 5050 can take 7th gen, but not 9th gen. Optiplex's are typically limited to one gen.

Is there a processor compatibility list available anywhere? The current documentation shows:
With the January firmware, is that list still applicable?
Thanks.

CPU list stays the same because chipset remains the same.

You're welcome. : ) I can also imagine you were hoping for something a little better though for Win11?

This is a good question for @Chino de Oro or @redxps630 . I don't use Win11.

"delete all existing partition[s] to one unallocated space" To add further detail, don't delete partitions labeled "MSR" and "System."

Windows installation guide from Dell also has the same agreement here, Full Resolution - Windows Reinstallation - YouTube
