Optiplex 7040 Micro Max Memory configurable

According to Dell Optiplex 7040M manual, the system is supported up to 32GB memory configuration (2x16GB, dual channels, DDR4 DIMM. Had any one ever upgraded the system Optiplex,7040 Micro with 2x16GB DIMMs. It was very confusing since the earlier spec says it supports up to 16GB while the latest manual version says it supports 32GB memory configuration.

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/optiplex-7040-desktop/opti7040m_om/installing-the-memory-module?guid=guid-89fb4f41-39a4-424c-ad10-2b96ddfbbfd7&lang=en-us

Open the PDF file and read the Max memory configuration.

There are only two places on earth where you can buy memory that works in dell computers.

1) You can buy directly from dell (they have a store)

2) Or, you can buy crucial brand memory. Crucial is the only memory brand that will ever work in dell computers other than genuine dell parts.

Most other memory brands will not function in dell computers.

This is what I have learned from the rock stars here .

Are you sure that where it says (link?) "16 GB", that doesn't mean 16 GB per slot?

Crucial says maximum memory is 32 GB in the 7040 Micro. And since they offer a 2x 16 GB kit for this model, they guarantee it works or they take it back...

EDIT: And I guess it's possible Dell originally validated it with 2x 8 GB max, but subsequently validated it with 2x 16 GB.

Remember to avoid Kingston Value RAM.  It'll have "KVR" in the model #.  Regular Kingston is okay.

I am out of town and can not access to the service tag. Second, it is a simple general question. It applies to all Optiplex 7040 Micro system. I just wonder why Dell documents say differently as the spec says it supports Max 16GB memory why the latest manual says it supports 32GB. I do not think you should need the service tag to answer this question.

They can only support/troubleshoot Dell PC that are still inside the purchased warranty period. Which is why they ask for the service tag number. DELL-Admin

I did not ask Dell for their service. I asked this community for their experience. It is not useful to ask for service tag instead of just answer the question if they can.

Thank you but the version of DIMM which Dell is selling is not Crucial DIMM. Here what I did. I did open up the system to check the DIMM part number then Google it’s spec. Once I know what type of DIMM, then I search for any manufactures have that type of DIMM. The reason you said only Crucial DIMMs work because Dell designed their systems with Micron DIMM types. Other memory manufactures might not have the same type of memory as Micron but if it is the same spec, it should work.

I agreed with Ron regarding his latest post (i.e. EDIT). Dell initially validated 7040 Micro with 16GB memory configuration (Max memory) and later tested with 32GB.

Here is the link for Optiplex 7040 spec.

@Dave_SD  - Some brands of RAM will work, others may not. All depends on the specs of the modules. And even if the specs seems to be the same, that doesn't guarantee the RAM actually will work.

The advantage of buying from Crucial is, when they recommend RAM for a specific PC model, they guarantee it works or they take it back at no cost the the buyer. Not too many other websites or stores make that guarantee.

It's a bot asking for the Service Tag. That way Dell will know if the PC is under warranty or not. And if it is under warranty, Tech Support will step up to help out...

@Dave_SD

Some folks have machines that do not work with some memory brands that otherwise meet all specifications.

This leads to campfire tales ... kingston bad, crucal good. xxx good, yyy bad, etc.

If the memory meets specifications, it will work. Dell computers are not different from other brands, and were not born under a bad "sign".

I have, for example, a memory module, a DELL branded item item with logo, packaging and installation instructions, which is actually an evil kingston module.

Dell buys from the cheapest bidder, and does NOT bestow special blessings on the part.

Not necessarily true!  Read these forums, and you'll see lots of threads about certain RAM not working in certain Dell PC models. Dell PCs are known to  be fussy about RAM...

A while back, Dell started installing Hynix RAM in some of their PC models. Except the Hynix RAM didn't work right. Dell eventually had to release BIOS updates to fix the problems so Hynix RAM would work. Here's just one example of a BIOS update that mentions fixing compatibility issues with Hynix RAM.

Hi! Ron,
Just curious, are you working for Micron/ Crucial? Thanks.

That's a big negative. Don't work for Micron/Crucial or Dell or for any other high tech company, and never have. I'm a PC user just like you.

You and everyone else around here are free to buy any brand of RAM or other PC component(s) from anywhere you choose. But after being around this forum for a long time, I've learned lots of stuff and back up what I post with evidence...

I think so too. Just dell's feeble attempt at AI.

Their bots aren't very good yet, but they may improve them.

At first, I thought their bots were humans, but I found out about dell bots. There are several ... like dell cares, dell this, or dell that.

Some day you can shout into your dellphone ... DellMan ARE YOU THERE?

Just like the old 1980 commercials, DellMan will fly to the rescue like Mighty mouse.

Has anyone tried a 2x32 GB SoDIMM configuration to see if you can have 64gb of ram?
