OptiPlex 7070 SFF - Replacing the PSU

Okay folks - hope everyone is well.  I've got a new-to-me media PC available which is an Optiplex 7070 SFF with a 240w PSU - according to the gentleman who currently owns it.  I have a LP Yeston Radeon RX550 (http://www.yeston.net/product/details/234/272) that I'd like to be able to use in it.  I currently have an older Shuttle XPC with 300w PSU but it was locking up occasionally when I had the Radeon card in there.  Using onboard video - thing is solid.  I am thinking the PSU wasn't really enough to power things along.

So question for the Dell Power experts (in no order) - @DELL-Chris M , @speedstep , @redxps630

I'd like to get a hold of one of the following PSUs for the Optiplex 7070 SFF using 6+4 pins and would like some confirmation/advice/thoughts:

360watt: https://www.365powersupply.com/product/vm8kr-0vm8kr-360w-power-supply-unit-for-optiplex-3050-7050-3668-mt-h360egm-00/

460watt: https://www.365powersupply.com/product/4fwf7-04fwf7-460w-psu-for-dell-3046-3040-3050-5050-mt-h460ebm-00-64pin/

I've been scouring the multiple threads and seen different viewpoints from folks on the ability to use different higher rated PSUs on lower tier models...but hoping to find something specific to this need.

This was a good, but short thread too, shoutouts to @stevan1990 @JohnSnow : https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/Upgrade-7070SFF-Power-Supply/m-p/7681650

That's fine if you still want one of the other ones to jump in here.

The RX 550 is a validated card for the 7070 SFF.

According to the 7070 spec sheet, the SFF comes with a 200w PSU.  You might want to check the label on your PSU.

From the 7070 spec sheet:

Thanks for the quick reply and information. I've seen a bunch of YouTube videos for peeps upgrading the 200w to a 240w, though the spec sheet only shows those two 200s. As for the video card, it seems valid for the tower model, not necessarily the SFF.

Thanks you again for the info... Tis much appreciated.

I'll let others weigh in on it too!

You might've noticed it's the dual RX 550 that's for the tower only.  As for the GPU's that don't have "tower" or "SFF" by them it's because they're for both tower and SFF.

Whether you have 200w or 240w PSU, the RX 550 is good to go.

Re: As for the video card, it seems valid for the tower model, not necessarily the SFF.

you can use the MT psu in SFF and then the gpu for MT will be compatible with SFF too.  Dell just likes to keep the better config for MT.  Optiplex series 5 same model MT and SFF psu are interchangeable.

Thanks for the feedback thus far.  Quite right on the dual RX550 in the notes, I didn't catch that.  I plan on getting an HD Blu-ray drive so I can go old school and play any HD Blu-rays I have...or get.  I'm a sucker for the extra content.

I'd probably feel more comfortable having  a little more headroom on the PSU.  Will the two PSUs I linked to work okay in the 7070SFF?

If you might upgrade gpu in the future again, then consider the 460w or 500w Dell psu rather than 360w, if the price difference is small.  I have also heard some not so great consumer feedback of buying psu from 365, so do your own research and caveat emptor.

I was looking at reviews for both 365powersupply and Aliexpress... Ali's reviews are not great.  The good reviews are obviously fakes - e.g. me love good much!

I found one on eBay from a Texas seller, so at the least it's stateside and sold by eBay who have helped me out with less than honest sellers in the past.

@redxps630 - thank you for the PSU model list and information...good to have.  I agree with you - I went with the 460w instead of a 360w.  I'll plan to use the graphics PCIe power 6pin and adapt it to hook to power of extra 2.5" ssd and optical.  The white PCIe will go on the board as expected. The RX550 Yeston card doesn't have dedicated power connector.

Fingers crossed that this works!  I'll update the thread once I know for sure...just in case other searchers might find it useful.

Thank you.  Look forward to hearing about your success.  This psu upgrade using Optiplex series 6 psu (two 4 pin one 6 pin white + black PCie 6 pin) to replace low power series 5 psu (one 4 pin one 6 pin white) is a popular trend.  You may have seen some user jumping up and down exclaiming something but your validated experience will be quite helpful to many.

lol brad got a toy. I still get the psu from the link. did you get a malware on your smart phone?

more common to see the reverse power adapter from sata to 6 pin.  the following would not work for OP.

redxps630_0-1634405760350.jpeg

Actually I am not sure OP can possibly adapt PCIe 6 pin to sata power as the sata needs 3.3 and 5V, which the 6 pin does not have.  The 6 pin has 12V only.  So this is a no go.

Dell mobo uses proprietary SATA PWR socket (black) to power sata drives.  OP can get a Dell 6 pin to sata cable to power additional sata ssd.

I'm not sure about adapting 6-pin power for SSD and ODD as I never had to do it, but they do make the adapters, so I'm sure it would work.  If you simply use sata power splitters, it'll be fine.  SATA power splitters on Amazon. SSD's use little power compared to an HDD, only 5v.

Both RX 550 cards are only 50w.  If it were over 100w, 360w or higher PSU would definitely be necessary.  As for a GTX 1050 listed on the spec sheet, it's a 75w card that the 260w stock PSU in the MT can power.  Just mentioning.

It's possible the dual RX 550 doesn't come in LP (low profile) so it's listed as "tower only."

It looks like you have everything you need to make an informed decision.  Also, since redxps630 said 360w PSU's from that one vendor are no good, I'd definitely take his word on it.

It looks like you have everything you need to make informed decisions.

@redxps630. The AliExpress link you gave above goes to a toy.

it has three sata ports: black, blue, white.  the white is reserved for odd and is a sata 3 (6Gb/s) and great for ssd too if you give up odd to have up to three ssd.

@redxps630  You funny.  I should've tried the link twice.  I got the PSU this time.  Had me wondering if you're in a different country and that's why it did that.

Ha ha...no, the link took me to the PSU at least when I clicked on it the first time.

Really good information from everyone on the adapters that I might be able to use.  So the white 4pin and white 6pin will go on the motherboard.  Which of the additional PSU plug would go into an adapter for me to power some of the sata devices?

Thank you again for all the good info...been years since I've done a deep dive into building and upgrading a system.

Oh snap...i didn't see that black connector on the motherboard pictures.  (I don't yet have the PC so I haven't looked at it up close).

That's great info...and much appreciated... This should be a fun little project. I got my Shuttle XPC refurbed back in 2014 or 2015, so it's been great for me.  This 7070SFF should last me a number of years - only going to be used for streaming, playing music, etc.  Basic stuff.

Re:  So the white 4pin and white 6pin will go on the motherboard.  Which of the additional PSU plug would go into an adapter for me to power some of the sata devices?

neither of the PSU additional black PCIe 6 pin adapters can go into an adapter to make sata power connector.  What Dell uses is the next standard called ATX12VO.  PSU supplies only 12V to the mobo.  It is the mobo that generates additional 3.3 and 5V to power sata.  that is why the mobo has a mini 6 pin black sata pwr connector where you plug in the Dell cable (e.g., GP2JM) to power sata.  Just to be clear this is a standalone cable that has nothing to do with PSU.

InkedDell_OptiPlex_7070_SFF_motherboard_LI.jpg

For your refence this is the pinout of the mini 6 pin black SATA PWR socket on Dell mobo.  It is a power socket to provide power to sata ssd.  It has the 3.3 and 5V needed for sata power.  It is generated by the mobo (not PSU).  PSU only supplies 12V to mobo.
