Optiplex 7090 Audio Input

I need to digitize some old reel-to-reel audio tapes.  I have an external amp and speakers connected to the audio port on the back of the 7090 and that works fine for output.  There is another audio port on the front of the tower with a headset icon just above it.  The setup manual identifies this as "Universal audio jack port" but doesn't seem to offer any further detail.  The implication is this is some kind of combination input/output for headsets (as indicated by the icon).  Does anyone know if I can I plug line level stereo into this for input?  Any information on the pin wiring?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I thank everyone for their input.  Although I remain a strong fan of Dell computers I have come to the conclusion that the use of a single audio jack for both input & output is not a reliable solution for my needs.  Helpful users on the Audacity forum have convinced me to abandon this path and move on to a USB mixer.  Several suggestions made and I've decided to go with a Behringer 302USB device.  There are smaller, cheaper devices but this one has features I appreciate.  Here's a link for anyone interested:  https://www.behringer.com/behringer/product?modelCode=P0ADV  Amazon sells them for $69.

Use a 3.5 mm 2 rings plug.  When seeing a pop-op, select line-in.  Configure the listen tab to listen to this device.

Refer to this thread if it does not work and needing troubleshooting.

@Chino de Oro

I think you forgot to link the thread?

@SuperTech

For future reference, are you on Win10 or 11?

@Chino de Oro Thanks!  This is exactly what I needed.  Never encountered a "Universal audio jack port" before.  I'm currently running Windows 10.  Big help and the link provided lots of details.

@Chino de Oro After getting appropriate patch cord and attempting per your description I get no pop-up and so can't select line-in option.  I have the reel-to-reel recorder output live with audio on the patch cord but no response when plugging into the front jack on my Opti 7090.  (see images below) In control panel\sound, on the recording tab, the Jack Mic appears with a Red down arrow and "Not plugged in" and under Jack Mic properties there is NO line tab.  The Realtek audio card does appear enabled and under it's properties listen is checked.  I've also unplugged the webcam and results are still the same.  Any ideas?

Check the Startup apps to see if Realtek audio and Waves MaxxAudio are enable and allow to run at Windows startup.  Most often, the issue can be fixed by a complete uninstallation of Realtek audio driver, reboot the machine and either allowing Windows self-install of Realtek audio or manually performing audio driver installation (depending how Windows was configured).  Upon the audio driver installation is complete, Waves MaxxAudio should be installed automatically and a notification (from tray icons area) would popup to let you know.

If you choose to perform it manually, download and install this audio driver Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Driver_JJFWX_WIN_6.0.9511.1_A79.EXE.  Remember to check the box perform a clean install (or to that relevant), it will remove the existing driver first, prompt you to reboot machine and it will continue with driver installation.  After it finishes, you can download and install this Waves-MaxxAudio-Pro-Application_MT77C_WIN64_4.0.53.0_A07.EXE.  Remember to reboot between installation for system to take effect.

When the audio driver and audio controller app are installed properly, you can, at anytime, unplug and re-plug an audio cable and a popup for selection should come up.  Only then, when the line-in is recognized, other audio configurations will be available for selection.

I know, sometimes it's easier said than done, especially when I see and clicking on an already working system.  But, only so much that I can guess what the issue could be and hopefully, pointing you to the right direction.

I use both Win10 1809 and 22H2.  In 22H2, I have no line-in either.  (Precision 3620)  However, the physical line-in still works using what Win10 calls the microphone jack.  1809 still has line-in.

I thought 22H2 still had line-in, so I don't know what update changed it.
