You're welcome.

Optiplex 7040 Spec Sheet

I think you meant 7020 and not 7040?  Up to you.  7040 takes 6th gen CPU's.

Depending on how much RAM you need, if you have any RAM heavy apps, 7020 has max listed RAM @ 16GB and 9020 @ 32GB.  It's not in specs, but some people have exceeded RAM in 7020 up to 32GB.  If I don't mention it, it'll probably come up anyway.

Tech Guides are available as well.

No you cannot.

The 755 is not like the newer models.

755 Dell disks were NEVER 7 for the 755. It

Was Windows 2000 and XP.

Not only is 7 End of Life you cant get disks even from microsoft because they removed them from digital River.

Dell is too proprietary to allow for a different MB update even from one their own PC's.  If you look at the backs of the 380, GX620, 755, 780, and etc, not even the rear panel layouts (attached to the MB) are the same.  Proprietary MB screw holes, wiring - like the front I/O panel, and MB connections can vary as well.

More detail I could go into, but I think that should about cover it.

Re: I lost my Dell disks in a move some years ago, so would like to find a copy somewhere if anyone knows where.

Win 7 download is freely available on internet.

if you have a genuine product key, official download .iso.

if you do not have it, look around and you may find a free product key on lot of business pc COA sticker and you can borrow it.

Re: upgrade to 4th gen intel LGA 1150

Very difficult.  your 755 uses BTX motherboard/chassis.  LGA 1150 board is almost certainly all ATX or microATX such as the XPS 8700 or optiplex 3020/7020/9020 board.  BTX and ATX are mirror images.  You will have to cut the back panel of a BTX case to fit an ATX board.  Not a good direction to go unless it is a vintage collectible case such as XPS 720/710/700 which some people mod to fix ATX.

Hi @BCBirdman,

Not sure if you're familiar - 7020/9020 take 4th gen.  3020 not as expandable.

@redxps630

"Win 7 download is freely available on internet."

I disagree.  Especially since it requires a COA Key.

No Idea why you would say that given that this model came with windows 2000/XP a very long time ago.

Windows 7 is End of Life End of Support.

I have no issues with Win 7, as my 755 came with Win 7 and a Dell OS/Drivers disk. I still have spare MS Technet Win 7 Keys if needed, and as far as I am concerned, Win 7 meets all my needs, without the intrusions that MS Win 10 imposes on a user.

I removed Windows Explorer, IE, Edge and any other dead weight programs from my PC, and stopped signing into my Microsoft accounts and am at last free of Microsoft/Outlook and MSN my PC's. I no longer get 500+ junk emails a week in my Outlook Inbox/Junk Mail.

I have no faith in the MS/Cisco cloud as contaminated MSN feed hijacked my 755 and cellphone, It took almost a week to recover from that, and I lost all my contacts (So called cloud backups failed). It could of been worse, if I had not hit/held the Power button immediately the hijack message occurred. After that, I reverted back to Win 7.

Thank you,

I am looking at an Optiplex 7040 i7-4590 Quad or an Optiplex 9020 i7-4790 Quad.

755 never came with win7 / 7 drivers/  7 COA from dell.  Late in its life it did get VISTA WDDM 1.0 drivers as did the 760.  In 2009 win 7 was released and started showing up on the 760 models and carried over to the 780 models which eventually became WIN7 models. In 2012 windows 8.0 started showing up on 3020 7020 9020.
