OptiPlex 780 RAM upgrade issue
I'm trying to upgrade the RAM on my ancient OptiPlex 780 MT (2005-2009 I think) from 8G to 16G. I got 4 sticks of Crucial 4GB DDR3L 1600 MHz UDIMM (see link below) but the machine wouldn't boot and flashed the simultaneous 3+4 diagnostic lights (indicating memory config failure).

Do I not have the right RAM? If not, which one do I need?
Or could it be my BIOS, which is Dell A03 ?
Thanks for any help!

Here is the crucial listing for the 780 desktop. You didn't list which version of the 780 you have.

You may have to reset the BIOS (CMOS Memory) after inserting all the memory.
To clear (reset) the CMOS memory, power off the PC and remove the AC power cord from the power supply (or disconnect from AC power). Open the case and locate the CR2032 coin cell battery on the motherboard. Remove the battery for at least 10 minutes. Reinstall and try powering on.

Oops, thanks for pointing that out. OptiPlex 780 MT. And thanks for pointing me to the RAM. It seems I have the right kind.
So upgrading the BIOS isn't going to make everything "explode," leaving me with a dead PC or something? I'm leary of hardware.... (although, I know there are no guarantees)

Use Dell Support Assist. It can update your BIOS to whatever the latest version was and update any outdated drivers.
Due to how far back A03 is, Dell Support Assist might have you update in a couple or so steps before downloading the latest version. For example, I had to download something like A11 & A14 before going to A22.
Some people have claimed "not true," but it depends on what BIOS they're updating from.
Your PC won't blow up. It's often recommended to update BIOS before updating hardware. Having the latest BIOS allows you to have the latest security features that version had.

Thanks! That was helpful.
Would you, by any chance, know of an easy BIOS backup method?

You're welcome. You might be able to send it to a flashdrive and go from there if you want to back it up. If for some reason you want a previous version of BIOS, it can still be downloaded.
Might be more info than what you need - A problem that became common with Dell Precision's and updating BIOS is the new BIOS version would run the fans really fast. Some people rolled it back, but then they're rolling back security features. So some went with HWiNFO64 to help control the fans. It's also something you can download to keep an eye on the hardware.
As for that version of BIOS, I think Dell either fixed it or came out with a newer version to fix it as I haven't heard of the problem for a while now.
In the rarer instance BIOS causes problems, it's not ignored.

OK, once I have the required amount of time and nerve, I'll go ahead with the process. May take a bit. Will report back. Thanks for all the information!

It doesn't take long at all to download BIOS. I was excited and a little nervous at the same time. Your PC will require a restart after download.

Correction: I was just reading another post about updating BIOS. You might be able to send it to a flashdrive and go from there if you want to back it up. I'll edit that above post.
Oh yah, as for Dell Support Assist scanning your PC, that part can take a little while.
