Optiplex 790 Desktop 2nd HDD

Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Optiplex 790 Desktop. Specs: i5-2400, GT 1030, 8GB Ram, 500gb SSD.

I have a couple questions:

1. Can I replace the DVD drive with a hdd caddy like https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2nd-HDD-Optical-DVD-RW-Bay-Caddy-Adapter-12-7mm-to-2-5-HDD-SSD/153526099397?hash=item23bede5dc5:g:OSAAAOSw35ZdEOMO and put in a 2.5 inch HDD? I was reading the manual and it says I can only have 1 HDD internal or external - Is this true?

2. Can I upgrade the i5-2400 to an i7-2600k? And would I need to update BIOS for this - The version is something like 'A18 revision'

Thanks in advance,

Jacob.

If you have the DT 790 then it has a full size 5.25" optical drive, and that adapter won't fit.  You would need a 5.25" to 2.5" adapter.  As for the 2600, yes it will work fine, but a 2600K is pointless, since your motherboard doesn't support overclocking, and can't even be altered to.  The VRM wouldn't be able to cope with it.

Thanks for the answer chocolatekarma you've just saved me £15!

After doing some cleaning on my SSD, I have made the decision not to buy an extra hdd. Instead I want to upgrade the memory - to 16GB ddr3 (I currently have 8gb)

Would the pc3-12800u ram module work in my pc. So I would have 4x4gb pc3-12800u ram sticks...

Thanks for your help so far,

Jacob.

Am I correct to assume you're in the UK? Yes, that RAM will work fine in a 790.  This is what I would buy: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8GB-2-x-4GB-Memory-RAM-for-DELL-OPTIPLEX-3010-390-580-780-790-7900-9010-980-990/383036564616?hash=item592ec22488:g:4-sAAOSwU6RdIGgW

Hello again,

Thanks for making this product recommendation - before I go ahead and buy it, I noticed the speed is 1600mhz and according to https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-uk/sln152123/dell-optiplex-memory-compatibility-guide?lang=en the optiplex 790 can only handle speeds of up to 1333mhz. Will 1600mhz RAM still work on my opitplex?

Thanks for all of your help so far,

Jacob.

It will run fine.  I have 1600 RAM in my 790 also.
