If you just want your user data, and getting a new PC, best option is to get an external USB connected enclosure for the hard drive. Connect it to the new PC and copy the data.  After you get everything off of it, you can then use it for full disc image backups (using software such as the free Macrium Reflect). If you were making periodic backups there would be no problem now.

In using the disc in a different PC, sometimes it will work and others not, unless its an identical model. One issue will be different hardware drivers.

Re: Can I just buy a used Optiplex and switch my hard disc into it as a short-time solution?  Could it be any model Optiplex

If the 7010 has Windows 10 on it, then it is quite likely the hdd will still boot successfully after transplant to a different optiplex of any model (or any desktop pc) that supports Win 10.

Caveat: the temporary PC that will adopt the 7010 hdd needs to have the same boot mode as 7010, either both legacy or both uefi.  If the 7010 hdd Windows 10 was installed via legacy mode, it can only boot in another pc that uses legacy boot mode and not UEFI.  vice versa.

otoh if the 7010 has Windows 7 or older OS than it is less likely to work.  I find Windows 7 hdd often crashes after transplant to different pc.

Thanks for replies.  It is Windows 10.  This disc actually came fro m an older Inspiron which I killed trying to add memory, so having worked in 2 PCs maybe gives it better odds to also work in another Optiplex.  I was looking to try to find exact same model, but now might risk slightly different Optiplex model that can get here sooner.  I don't know anything about UEFI so expect I am using legacy boot if that is the standard.

I am finding I do have most or all the data I need from dropbox, but still would like to see my old setup to get things looking closer to the same, and remember where I was putting various files.

Re: I don't know anything about UEFI so expect I am using legacy boot if that is the standard.  now might risk slightly different Optiplex model that can get here sooner.

optiplex models that support both legacy and UEFI boot mode, or legacy option ROM within UEFI boot mode include:

780, 790, 7020/3020/9020, 7040/3040/5040, 7050/3050, 7060, 7070.

the boot mode have slightly different names in various BIOS, such as

Boot list option

• Legacy
• UEFI

Advanced Boot Options
  • Legacy
  • UEFI
Boot Sequence Allows you to specify the order in which the computer attempts to find an operating system from the devices specified in this list.
  • Legacy
  • UEFI
Advanced Boot Options Allows you to select the Enable Legacy Option ROMs option, when in UEFI boot mode. By default, this option is selected

PS Dell got rid of legacy boot support in optiplex 7080 or newer (series 6).
