Re:I saw a XPS 8490 power supply that has a maximum of 360w, which should work for what I need, but I am not entirely sure if the connectors would be compatible. Both use the 12v only standard and the connectors appear to be the same.

if your optiplex is 7050/7060/7070/7080 or 3050/3060/3070/3080 etc., they use same type of Dell proprietary psu that has white 6 pin and one to two white 4 pin connectors.  in addition the 360w psu has a black PCIe 6 pin connector.

That's good and all, but those other optiplex systems dont go anywhere near 360w so they wouldn't work. The connectors on the XPS systems are the same however. Would that PSU work with my optiplex?

Edit: Misread something. Thank you for the help!

I know this is an old post but I did want to give a big warning about switching ATX power supplies in the 7020 MT Optiplex for any new people.

Please look at your stock Dell PSU. It uses a standard ATX 24 pin connection. So you won’t have to use an adapter but you do want to make sure the replacement PSU pushes the same amount of amps or you won’t post at all.

New PSU’s around the same wattage push less amps but dell does have a required amperage. Try looking at higher wattage PSU’s and get as close to the stock one as possible in terms of amperage.
