You can and can also go to an i7 6700. This page at Hardware Corner can help with more information.

JOcean is spot on. 7040 has Intel 100 series chipset which supports all intel 6th gen core cpu, i7,i5,i3. You can even install i7-6700k and it would run, although bios does not support overclock.
