If the PSU only has a 6-pin connection for the MB and your MB has a 24-pin connection, an adapter won't work. Can't go from 6-pin to 24-pin. CAN go from 24-pin (PSU side) to 6-pin (MB side).
To assist further, please state Optiplex model and form factor/size.

If the optiplex psu has 6 pin, it can be upgraded to Dell oem psu 360w, or 460/500w depending on model.
the 24 to 6 pin adapter from Amazon was reported working for XPS 8940 which shares psu with optiplex 7080.
