The only times I have heard of this is either a bad MB or, and I suspect less likely, a weak CMOS battery. The battery would affect BIOS settings although you should see other symptoms such as a time and date problem or HDD/SSD not detected. On a 7-8 year old system I would replace the battery anyway and leave the old battery out of the system for 15 minutes before installing the new battery.
