2161DS-2 Web Interface Requires Old Java Version

Hi,

I've tested this repeatedly using various versions of the firmware and it seems that the 2161DS-2's web interface requires an old java version. The detailed error is:

"The application ahs requested a version of the JRE (version 1.5.0_11) that currently is not locally installed. Java Web Start is unable to automatically download and install the requested version. This JRE must be installed manually."

Here's the version info:

Application: 01.02.03.01

Boot: 01.00.00.04

Oscar: 00.00.16.00

UART: 01.00.01.01

Video: 01.00.00.13

Hardware: 00.15.00.00

This is a simple issue of the specific version being required in the JNLP file that it downloads & should be an easy fix in the firmware. I called tech support and they had no idea what I was talking about.

I don't know how closely Dell monitors these forums, but does anyone have a fixed firmware?

You are correct.  This error could be corrected by updating the firmware.  But, as it is also possible to run multiple versions of JAVA on a single machine, the issue is easily corrected.  In addition, if Sun would program newer versions of Java to be compatible with older interfaces, this issue would not even be relevant.  If Dell had to worry about reprogramming every Java component to keep up with JAVA updates/upgrades they would have their developers working on nothing but Java updates.  Again, since you can easily install the older version of Java, this is really not an issue.
