2950 won't boot

Hey guys, I currently have a Dell Power Edge 2950. I plugged both cables into both PSU but the only lights coming on are that of the power supplies being plugged.

Server makes no noise...  I don't even know where to start diagnosing the problem...

all advice much appreciated in advance

Most likely your motherboard then.

Try clearing the NVRAM using the jumpers on the motherboard.

Try disconnecting everything unnecessary from the system (remove all expansion cards, including the RAID controller, drives, and memory (except one stick in slot 1).  The riser cards (minus any expansion cards) must remain in.

Try removing the processors and trying each in slot 1.

Does the green light come on on the PSU when plugged into a KNOWN WORKING outlet (not a UPS) ... even if not connected to the server?  Does the status LCD come on?  If so, is it amber and scrolling a message, or is it blue?

Well right now when I plug it in the greenlight on the back of the 2xPSU come on... its the symbol with plug/electric shock. The outlets work 100% i plugged a Dell 300 into the same not long after.

So basically the only lights or action I see from this server are those 2 green lights on the PSU

Thank you for the reply!

It seems odd though that I dont even get a post screen.

1.NVRAM, to be clear I should move it over a pin.. try to power on, then move it back?

2. I am in the process

3. This will be last alternative

"It seems odd though that I dont even get a post screen. "

Not really ... POST is handled by the BIOS on the motherboard.  Several things may cause a no video problem, but if the motherboard is failed, then there may not necessarily be any POST/BIOS screens.

1. Yes, move the jumper to CLR, then power on.  Power off, move the jumper back to the original pins, and power on again.  If it works, it will most likely work after the first boot (with jumpers on CLR).

3.  It should be the last resort (which is why I listed it last), unless you are very skilled and comfortable handling/replacing processors.

Also you can try to unplug power cord from one of psu and try to run server with out it, just using one psu, if it still not starting try another, good idea as theflash1932 sayed, trying to disconnect everything unnecessary, also you should try to remove processors and put them back again. If you have resources, try to replace PSU(take for test working psu from another similar server).
