Adding additional CPU for a Dell PowerEdge 2950
Hello All.
I would like to purchase an additional CPU to upgrade my server performance.
I know my existing CPU is an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5140 @ 2.33GHz.
I now my new/(used) CPU should be the same. What I'm not sure about is should I also match the following:
- Revision (I think mine is B2)
- Stepping (Mine is 6, but reseller rarely publish it.)
- CPU eSpec code - Xeon 5140 comes with mulitple especs codes (SL9RW, SLABN...). I'm not sure what is mine and how to check it without removing the heatsink.
How do I know what CPU will fit in with the existing one? Am I wrong thinking it can work?
Thanks a lot

Differing revision & Stepping should not cause any problems, however I always match components when possible. There are three different flavors of the 5140, if you run cpu-z you can see if you have a B2 or G0 on the main tab, from there you can either purchase the SL9RW/SLABN (B2 steppings) or the SLAGB (G0 Stepping).
