Auto Power On

Hi to all !

I'm looking for a solution to a "problem" with my PE 600 SC :

I want the PC automatically powers On when AC Power is restored, after my UPS automatically switch on at 8:00 AM everyday.

I looked into the BIOS and there is no "AC Power Recovery" setting, is there another solution to do this automatic power on ?

Thanks in advance.

I didn't see anything in the 600SC user guide that allows you to automatically set the power on mode or auto power on at a certain time, like on the 400SC and many Dimensions:

Hello,

Did you solve your problem of auto-start (after a power failure) ?

I have the same problem with two 2600 servers delivered last november by DELL.

When the power source is momently off then on or the power cable disconnected then reconnected, the server does not start automatically. We must push the front panel power-on button on.

All the DELL servers (all types) delivered to me before and after are auto-start.

I did not find any solution with the BIOS or Firmware.

Hi,

No I didn't solve the problem, but I will ask to DELL support if there is a solution, for example a BIOS update containing auto-start option.

Bye.

I got the same answer from my local DELL representative (auto-start not implemented on PowerEdge servers).

This is not true ! I have one PowerEdge 2650 server at latest revision of BIOS, firmware and so on, and it is auto-start ! And there is no option in the BIOS about the auto-start functionality.

They said that this feature is not implemented into poweredge servers for security reasons, but why on other servers this feature is implemented and not on poweredge ?? I will reply and see what they say.

Charles here. I have the exact same problem with my 600SC. We have a total of 60 DELL servers from 6300, 6400, 2450, 2550, 2650, etc etc. All these other servers have AC Power Recovery features enabled!!!

Perhaps Dell should come out with a BIOS fix for this. It is a major pain that I didn't calculate on and it will cost me time everytime we have a power loss! It is unthinkable to have a server not do AC Power Recovery! The funny thing is, the GX110 and the GX150 desktops have this feature!!!

About the auto-start capability on the DELL systems :

Hereafter is the answer from DELL France and DELL Sweden :

The "last state power" capability is by default on the server.
This means the server recovers the same state than before the power failure.
If the state was "power switch on" (which is the case to start the system
the first time), the servers starts automatically after a power failure.
If the state was "power switch off" (which is the case when the server is
manually put off), the servers does not start automatically after a power
failure.
The exception is when there is an UPS which shutdowns properly the server
some minutes after the power failure. In this case, when the power comes
back, the servers does not start because the "last state power" shows that
the system was put off properly (like manually)

I have a PowerEdge 1550 and don't have an auto-start feature.  I just installed the latest BIOS A08 and still no auto-start feature.  And unfortunately I was told by Dell that since the 1550 was discontinued they will no longer release anymore BIOS updates, so I guess that means I'll never have this feature which I really need.

Does anyone know of any solutions to this problem?  I have a remote control power strip and I'd like to able to shutdown and restart the power remotely.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Dan

Okay... Now that we know some of these servers are capable of turning themselves back on after a power outage, is there a solution in the case were you have a UPS shutting the server down? Has anyone configured a system to get around this? The only way around this I can think of is dialing into the UPS and issuing a start command from there. But even at that, I'm not sure it works on the 2650. Any thoughts?

Yes, but the problem is that these three options are missing from PoewrEdge 2600's BIOS

If I recall correctly, I've read somewhere on a Dell forum that this was a Microsoft issue and had nothing to do with Dell BIOS.
The server is shut down and put in the wrong (last) power state. There was a fix/workaround but I can't remember

I'll try to find some more information.

if your server is beyond Generation 12 you should see this

AC Power Recovery

option in the Server Security section of your BIOS
