Boot from USB on PCIe Card Dell - PowerEdge T420

Hello community, is it possible to boot from USB using the StarTech PEXUSB312A2 USB PCIe Card? Or rather, is it possible to boot from USB on any USB PCIe card? When I enter into the BIOS, the PowerEdge T420 cannot seem to find any USBs from the card to boot from, however Linux recognises the card and I can use the USB as a mass storage device. The front USBs work for boot, however I do not want to suffer from USB 2.0 speeds...

Thanks, Bill.

Hello thank for choosing Dell. As this is not a Dell certified (nor that this is a part for a server either) part there’s nothing I can help with I will leave this to the rest of the contributors here. Wish you a good one.

This may not be the answer you were looking for, but i'm currently using Clover to boot from the internal USB port that then points to my PCIe NVMe drive to boot Windows 11. That is one pitfall of the T320/T420s, not being able to boot from PCIe devices. With that said, if you're dead set on using the PCIe USB, Clover might be able to then point to your PCIe USB to continue the boot process.

@Ninemeister Are you sure?, currently I am booting without problem with a Samsung 950 Pro 512Gb NVME drive installed with adapter in a PCIe x 16 slot of the Poweredge T420 Tower with Windows 10 Pro OS, therefore the Standard Dell support answer about this T420 or T320 only supporting SATA or SAS is false

It depends on if it's a later build T420. The majority of the T420s and T320 didn't support booting from a PCIe NVMe. Same as with the R720 (which I also have) and other 12th gens. On most of them that i've seen the PCIe drive never populates as a bootable source in the bios. The 12th gens also technically don't support bifurication, but i've seen some later years support it.

@tonschk

Could you please do me a big favor? Could you take a picture of the BIOS boot order screen and post it here? I'm curious how it's worded for you in the boot order menu. The menu that's the same as this one...

Hi, later today I going to try find the page in the BIOS for the moment I attach photo of Device manager showing the NVME Samsung 950 Pro SSD used as lonely single  booting device

Hi, is this screen what you was looking for?, Yes for sure the substitute Nidec fan at 1.85 Amps I installed to swap the stock Sunon fan at 1.90 Amps the reason for the horrible noise problem, now I swap and installed again the stock Sunon fan and the computer is completely dead silent barely audible only at start up for about 20 seconds is medium audible other than that I am very happy now, I going to install again the BIOS version 2.9.0
