Cannot Boot after adding a removable IDE drive to Poweredge 2600.

I have a Poweredge 2600 using the PERC4 raid on SCSI discs. Operating system is Win 2003 server. I have a cradle with a removable IDE drive which I wish to use for images/backups and have fitted a PCI IDE card. This card is recognised by the BIOS and the software drivers are operating OK in Windows. Boot order for the HDDs is set in BIOS so that the SCSI raid is first and the IDE second. The machine will boot Ok if the IDE drive is turned off or removed. If it is on, the machine will not boot and merely tries to reindex the active directory. Once it has done that, it says not all services have been started but never actually gets to a log in screen. Any suggestions?

Is there an option to set IDE device to "non bootable", or just remove it from the boot order all together.

There is no option to make it "Non bootable". It cannot be removed from the boot order. It is placed as last in the listing of hard disk boot order. The two sections on boot order now show as follows:
Boot order:
  • Floppy
  • CD
  • Hard disk c:

Hard disk drive boot order:

  • Raid
  • System BIOS devices
  • IDE

Is the drive on the end of the ide cable or middle?  if at the end try the middle.
