Command timeout on physical disk
Hello all,
I am looking to see if I can get some assistance on a recurring error we get on one of our servers. I've dug through the search results but can't see to find a conclusive reason for this problem.
The server is a PowerEdge T610
The sequence of alerts/warnings usually go something like:
- Unexpected sense. SCSI sense data: Sense key: 3 Sense code: 11 Sense qualifier: 0: Physical Disk 1:0:7 Controller 0, Connector 1
- The Patrol Read corrected a media error.: Physical Disk 1:0:7 Controller 0, Connector 1
- The Patrol Read has stopped.: Controller 0 (PERC 6/i Integrated)
- (and then 5 - 20 instances of) Command timeout on physical disk: Physical Disk 1:0:7 Controller 0, Connector 1
We do run local backups to a network location on this server, however the timeouts do not usually occur while these are running.
The disk in question is non a "official Dell hard disk". We are speculating that this is the reason for the problem, but would like confirmation to put our minds at ease.
Any suggestions or help is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Marcus

Marcus,
What is the driver and firmware version on the controller? If it is really far out of date then it can cause the timeouts. What is the drive and array showing under the controller currently?

Hello Chris,
Thanks for your reply.
Driver and firmware versions are:
Firmware Version 6.3.3.0002
Driver Version 5.02.121.64
Storport Driver Version 6.2.9200.16547
We managed to update the Firmware Version, however could not find any more recent Driver Versions.
All of the drives have an 'Online' state and the arrays are all OK.
Would the driver be causing the problem?
Cheers,
Marcus

The error persists even after the firmware update.
It continues to give the error perhaps once or twice a week. Almost always at night time.

See if the error repeats since updating the firmware. How often was it erroring previously?

Marcus,
What is the OS on the server? Do you have Open Manage installed? If so, does that drive show a YES below Predicted Failure?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Server is running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter and has Open Manage installed.
Predicted Failure reads No.
Here is the info for the disk.
Thanks for your help.

According to your Product ID, it is a desktop/consumer drive and not an enterprise-class drive ... that is almost guaranteed to be your problem.
