Dell 2650 servers
WE now have 5ea 2650 servers, 1-fileandprint, 1-sql, 1-exchange, 1-DC02 2nd domain controller w/the tape backup and 1- DC01 Main domain controller. We are getting quotes to replace these and wonder do we really need 5 and can we combine some of them so all we needed was 3. What server would you recommend

We have started buying 2900's for File/Print & SQL servers, as when specced with 10 disks, we can create two decent sized RAID 5 packs with 5 disks in each. We then store the SQL databases on one raid pack, and the file data on the other. That way if the DB server is getting hammered, it doesn't affect the file/print throughput so much.
Since the introduction of the 2950's, we have moved over to the one physical, one virtual DC per site mentality, as the 2950's pack so much power into 2U, they make perfect virtual hosts. We run with the VMWare server product (which is free), and then sit the VM's on top of it. Exchange makes for a very nice package to run inside a virtual machine as it's not overly resource hungry, and DC's also make for good virtualisation targets as they use next to no resource at all.
Finally, we have been speccing 1950's with the 4 hour maintenance as our physical DC's.
