Dell Poweredge T140 Hyper-V VM slow performance

Hi,

I'm using Hyper-v bare metal 2016 and dell PowerEdge T140 to make a VM for Sql Server 2016, but i noticed a slow performance in the VM.

The CPU and memory are good, but the disk queue stuck between 5 and 10.

I already used Dell PowerEdge R240 to made the same environment ( a VM with windows server 2016 and Sql server 2016), everything works well.

Hypervisor: Hyper-V 2016

VM OS: Windows Server 2016

Hi,

If the performance is slow in disk queue, it might be the RAID controller is not supporting the OS. May I know if the 2 servers are using the same type of RAID controller?

Is the T140's hardware firmware up to date?

Hi,

yes, you have to recreate the VD. There is no option to migrate from the software RAID to the hardware RAID, I'm afraid.

Hello,

In PowerEdge T140 i can only find PERC S140.

But in PowerEdge R240 i can chose between PERC H330 or PERC S140, and i go with PERC H330.

Hi.

The T140 is sold with several storage controller options, maybe the one you own was bought with just the S140. If you send over the systems service tag in a private message, we can check this for you.

If there is just the S140 this is the reason for the performance "issue" - S140 is just a software RAID controller, so, all the I/O are managed by the CPU.

You should consider buying an add-in card then, the T140 supports H330 (75D1H, CG2YM, TD2NM, 99T5J)[https://i.dell.com//sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/Dell-PowerEdge-RAID-Controller-H330.pdf] and the H730P with cache (X4TTX, J6MDM) [https://i.dell.com//sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/Dell-PowerEdge-RAID-Controller-H730P.pdf].

I added the part numbers in brackets, for searching purposes

Hello @DELL-Stefan R

Thanks for the answer.

So, is the change of raid controller from S140 to H330 needs to rebuild the raid disks and reinstall the OS or i can switch to H330 without losing data ??
