Dell T420 - Powering Extra Hard Drives

Hello,

I have a T420 which already has 8x hard drives occupying the hot-swappable slots. I want add three extra hard drives to this server, however, my questions is, how can I power them?

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find much information about it online. The closest I got (I think) was finding this cable (model W44NJ) but I wonder where I would plug it in.

Looking at the manual and after analyzing the internals of the server, it seems like I'd plug it on the GPU power connector located either on the Interposer board or power distribution board. Both of these board have the GPU power connector as shown on the following illustration:

These drives will be connecting to a PCIe card and the server has two 750W power supplies. I'd appreciate if someone could confirm this or guide me on how to accomplish this.

Thanks

Hello, thanks for your question.

Since you are on option 2 already, adding an extra Dell part will be not recommended and we can't not guarantee for a 3rd party part use as you may be aware.

Drive Bays

Option 1: 4x 3.5" cabled SAS or SATA drives

Option 2: 8x 3.5" or 2.5" hot-swappable SAS, SATA, or SSD drives

Option 3: 16x 2.5" hot-swappable SAS, SATA, or SSD drives

Hope this helps and have a good one.

Thanks for your response. Could you confirm part # W44NJ is designed for the Dell T420 and where it would be connected?

Hi,

It's : Power Cable PSU to SATA HDD & ODD, (PowerEdge T420)

Sorry I am afraid it's hard for me to provide the exact location for the connector. hope this still helps.
