What browser are you using and what version of the browser? There are configuration options to choose whether or not to use Java. You can change the mode between native and Java. If you set it to native it will use what the browser is defaulted to use. Native mode for Internet Explorer will use ActiveX. Java or using any other browser should use Java.
I'm using firefox with the Java plugin, it seems to work best with that at the moment. I have tried Internet explorer but that doesn't even load the drac page properly.
