ESM failure question

Hi,
 
My out-of-warranty system has recently been flashing yellow.  Diagnostics posted this info:
 
ESM firmware is 5.46
backplane firmaware is 1.30
error code: 1700.0C2A
fan failed on power supplies 1 and 2 of ESM
ESM is not fully operational
Will the system still function properly?

What system are we talking about?
 
The fan failures sound bad.  Do you think there is actually some fan failures?
 
1. Identify your system and go to support.dell.com
2. look up the drivers for your system
3. update the BIOS, firmware etc...
 
See if there are still failures.

It's a PE 2550, the actual power supply fans appear to be functional. The update for the ESM firmware appears to require a windows OS installed, which I have linux & there doesn't appear to be another method of updating the ESM firmware. If the ESM is dead, which it appears to somehow be, will the system still operate normally?

You can update from a DOS boot disk...but first you have to extract the files on a Windows box.
 
 
Choose: a59cust.exe
 
Custom Instructions for a59cust.exe:
1. Download the .exe file to a directory on your hard drive. The file
downloaded is a self-extracting executable.
2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
The files may be un-zipped to floppy disk or hard drive(if the hard drive
is in the system to be updated).
3. After the files have been un-zipped, you may delete the self-
extracting file downloaded in step 1.
MS-DOS Version
1. Boot the system requiring the update to DOS.
2. Insert the diskette created above or change to the directory on the
hard drive where the files were un-zipped.
3. At the DOS prompt, type "SMFLSH". This will run SMFLSH.EXE
4. Answer “Y” at the prompt to begin the upgrade.

Hi, I've updated firmwares and the error message is still the same. It appears the system is still usable even though the ESM is "not fully operational", can anyone verify that this is indeed the case? Thanks!
