Have you created a RAID volume for the drive? With it being a standalone disk, you would need a single drive RAID 0 for the controller to put the drive online.

Hello,

What model server is this? What PERC is contained within? Is the drive connected to the PERC? If so, is it a RAID member, or not? What version of ESXi are you trying to install?

If you can share the answers to these questions, the community will be much better equipped to answer your question.

It is a PowerEdge T630 with a Dell PERC H730 Controller. I have only one drive in the server which is my target drive, the drive appears in the bios, but in the esxi installation it doesn't show up. I am installing "VMware ESXi 6.5 U3" downloaded from dell website following these steps here.

I am having this exact same problem however I cannot create a RAID 0 with only one disk. How do I create a RAID0 with only one disk when RAID requires more than one disk?

What tool are you using to try to create the volume? What do you see when you go to create the volume, and what controller are you working with? Creating a single drive RAID 0 would only require selecting a single disk from the presented disks and proceeding to create the volume.

Which storage controller you have on the server? If you have a raid controller like H700 you can create a RAID 0  using PERC BIOS Configuration Utility during boot. Refer "Creating Virtual Disks" section on page 88 of below link for more details.

Tried this on a PowerEdge R710 with the Dell iso of ESXi 7. Used the server config to setup a RAID 0 on a single drive and used the remaining drives to build a RAID 5. Initialized the volumes. Still no luck. The only drive that shows up is the USB stick I have the ISO installed on. Is there a trick to this I am missing?

Hello,

The latest ESXi version supported by the R710 is 6.0. I suspect there is likely a driver issue for the storage controller.

Hi, thanks for choosing Dell. As Dylan previously left the comment in the thread:

Could we have more information from you? It would be great if we could have more specific information.

Hello, I am having this same issue.  I have a Dell Precision T7910 running ESXi 7.03 on an NVME drive.  I have two other SAS drives in the system, a 4TB spinning drive and a 2TB 870 EVO. Both of the SAS drives are connected to the onboard 7910 LSI SAS3 MPT SAS3008 Controller (FW version 11.0.10.0/NData Version8.1.0.6).  Both physical disks show properly in the SAS controller configurator ...but there is no option to create a Raid of any sort using the configuration tool.  The Raid Creation option shown in the User Manual for this controller is not present in the Controller Management menu.  The only items in the menu are View Controller Properties, Change Controller Properties and Save Controller Properties.  None of these options have sub-menus to create a Raid Volume from the attached disks.  Like others have experienced, these SAS also disks do not show up in ESXi as available drives to create datastores.  Any ideas on what I can do to solve this?
