The only thing that the Lifecycle controller or the custom ISO do is package drivers. I would expect them to accomplish the same core thing, but specific drivers might be a little different. I generally recommend using the latest .ISO of the latest ESXi revision you can use. This way, you can get the latest drivers packaged into your deployment.
