factory disk configuration explained

What is the 39 MB system OEM reserved and the 2GB OS partition that ships with all new DELL PE servers.

Can you explain?

Can they be deleted. Should they be deleted?

Dirkdigs,

The 39mb partition is a utility partition that houses diagnostic tools, like 32bit Diagnostics. The 2 gb is a standard OS partition.

Now to answer the question, yes they can be deleted. 32bit Diagnostics is available on support.dell.com. The OS partition can be deleted and recreated to what you want during OS install.

Let me know if this helps.

So the 2GB OS partition is empty as it ships from factory? is that correct?

No ... that is the OEM/Reserved partition created by Windows during the install for boot files, encryption, etc.  2GB can NOT be a system/OS partition, as 2008+ requires a minimum of 32GB.  2GB might be bigger than necessary ... when you install Windows, normally a 350MB partition is created for this purpose.  That partition should be left intact unless you have a VERY good reason for needing to remove it.
