They claim they out grew it

There is no operating software, Please dont laugh but or desktops are using Windows Vista Business....what do i need to purchase to get everything tied in? there is no rush, but i have no idea on what software the server needs? Vista Business? etc.

The T110 wouldn't support installing the workstation OS on it. What you can install is Windows Server 2003 R2 (with SP2) That should be the cheapest option.

If you have a Raid controller installed you will need to load the drivers for it before attempting to install the OS.

What is the controller in the server?

Your order details show a PERC S100 RAID controller, which is a very low-end controller - it is just the onboard Intel chipset RAID functionality.

If you have only a single drive, then you cannot enable RAID, so you will need this driver, which is just the chipset/AHCI driver:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=3MTVW&FileId=2731110120&productCode=poweredge-t110&urlProductCode=False

If you had another RAID controller, you would see a "CTRL" prompt when you turn on your server (CTRL-R or CTRL-C).

You can install 2003 R2 on this server, and you can run XP, Vista, or Windows 7 on all your client PC, whether you actually implement a domain or not (workgroup).

However, simply putting your database on a server will not magically make it accessible to multiple users.  Your database must support multiple users.  What database is it?  Is it a standard database (MySQL, Access, Oracle, etc.) or is it a proprietary database program?

Thank you Mr.Theflash!,

When you said i got a lowend controller, i frowned, i spend under $400.00 for this no monitior/mouse ,keyboard, so if i got taken , a lesson learned,

1.) if i install 2003 R2,do istill need to enable RAID or purchase driver?

2.) rough idea on the cost of 2003 R2?

3.) cost of RAID driver?

4.)**our DATAbase if FILEMAKER PRO9

**stupid question can i buy a used 2003R2?

Thank you all for helping, this is new to me and hope i didnt make a bad purchase

Phillip,

The driver is located here, It is available for download, it doesn't cost anything - www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

Dell no longer offers Windows Server 2003, so it would have to be obtained from a 3rd party. The cost averages from $200-700, but there are places listing it cheaper.

Chris H(Dell),

I want to thank you and others that have been helping me and being honest with me. I promise these are the last questions for tonite! I will adress these to Chris H(Dell) others may chime in as well.

1.) when i get a monitor, keyboard, mouse hooked up, whats next?

Windows Server 2003?  Chris in my other email you mentioned windows server 2003 R2(with SP2) is that still correct?, or just Windows Server 2003.

2.) Chris mentioned to download the driver, its free, doesnt cost anything

so, once i get the monitor,mouse,keyboard..., Step#1;purchase Windows Server 2003 or 2003 R2(w/SP2)?

Step#2: download driver when Windows Server 2003 is installed?

Step#3: I then can load my Windows Vista Business?

Or did i miss quite a few steps??

Again thank you to all helping me

Philip

Please reply to THIS thread and don't start new ones for every reply :)

About the price you paid for this server:

The T110 is no longer sold by Dell, but you can get a brand new T110 II from Dell for $389 right now, which includes the same configuration as you have with  your T110:  the same onboard S100 controller (that would be turned off with only a single drive) and a single drive of 1TB.  I remember seeing a T110 a few weeks ago in the Dell Outlet for $400 that came with a better controller and two drives (for a RAID 1 - mirror).  In short ... make sure you do at least a quick search before buying what seems to be a good deal (or ask us).  I wouldn't say you got "taken", but with that configuration and price, you could have bought a new one with comparable specifications that would be under warranty for at least a year.

1. As Chris said, Dell provides drivers free of charge.  You will not need to purchase a RAID controller (unless you WANT to run hardware RAID for better performance).  For RAID, you would also need to purchase another drive that is the same type (enterprise SATA) and at least as large as the one you have.  You cannot enable RAID with only a single drive on your controller, so you should leave it disabled.  You will need the chipset driver already provided, and you will need to use nLiteOS.com to integrate the drivers into your installation disk.

2. As Chris said, the cost of Server 2003 varies greatly, as you will be purchasing a second-hand copy.  2003 non-R2 is not officially supported by Dell on this server, so make sure to get 2003 R2.  Make sure to purchase a copy WITH the license, not just the media/CD.

3. As stated, drivers are free.

4. Filemaker 9 does not list any "server" OS on its compatibility list - it might work, but you would want to contact Filemaker to make sure.  It sounds like a separate license is required for each computer that runs or accesses Filemaker Pro, whether running locally on separate computers or running on a single computer through Remote Desktop connections from different computers.  It would also appear as though Filemaker Pro is limited to a single concurrent connection; Filemaker Server would be required for multiple concurrent connections to the database.  Version 9 will also be unsupported by the company after September of this year.

www.filemaker.com/.../faq_us.html

All in all, I would say that the purchase of this server was indeed not even necessary - at least not to solve the problem you have described.  You may utilize this server to free up resources from the system currently running the database software, but it will not automatically allow both users to access the database at one time - as I understand the document, it is a restriction of the software you have.

I would investigate Windows Home Server 2011, it has all you would need for 2x clients plus some bell and whistles for management and backup.

Hi Phillip,

1) Yes, Windows Server 2003 R2 ( with SP2 ) is the minimal version required.

2) After purchasing the OS, you would need to run the drivers during the initial process of the installation. However, if you are not familiar with the process of running the Windows installation, you may also choose to download Dell's SMTD DVDs to run a guided installation that would load all the required drivers for you. ( ISO available here : http://dell.to/KWdlQD )

3) Windows Vista Business will not run on the server, your were advised to buy a server because with the Windows Server 2003 OS, you can actually manage and share access to your workstation units. I would strongly recommend that an IT professional to assist you directly on the actual setup of the network and especially the database, since we're not sure what kind of configurations are present and how the server ( if put in place ) would affect the existing setup.
