not sur eif you saw it, but here's the failure message:
error: Failed dependencies:
        rpm >= 4.0.4 is needed by srvadmin-omilcore-6.1.0-426.i386
        pciutils is needed by srvadmin-omilcore-6.1.0-426.i386
        /bin/sh is needed by srvadmin-omilcore-6.1.0-426.i386

if you have a DOS bootable floppy, download this file,  PE1850BmcA10.exe extract the files to the floppy, and follow the instructions in the readme.txt. This assumes you have a floppy drive on your 1850.

Actually I do and I had also noticed the error messages, but since I use Debian, I thought there were plain debian packages as there are for OSMA
~

~
I was wrong in thinking I had to install first ESM and that OMSA was just a web-based interface to it.
~
Now, what I am actually trying to do is to find a way to control PE's super intense/noisy fans
~
I have searched around quite a bit and AFAIK Dell hasn't made those fans' microcontrollers accessible
~
Do you know of a way to -safely- control them?
~
 Thanks again

you're right, no way to control the fans. only thing you can do is update the bmc and the bios to the latest and hop ethey lowered the fan speeds that way.

OK, I did update the bmc and the bios to the latest versions, but when I went:
~
 F2 > BIOS > CPU Information > Demand-Based Power Management
~
I could not enable it (it says "Disabled" and you can't change it)
~
So how do I quiet these loud fans?
~
 Thanks

One of my PowerEdge 2650 was really very noisy and I was annoyed all the time but after updating the ESM (Embedded Server Management) I found that it lowered the fan spped. You can give it a try

I was having this kind of problem on my Poweredge 2650 Server and I tried the method given in this post to repair the firmware and it was successfull. I hope this can also work for you. If you like to give it a try.
